As some, if not many, of you know, I am a newly-certified teacher in 7-12 mathematics and have been searching for a job for a full-time position for some time now.

Just yesterday, I received a phone call and participated in a phone interview with the principal of Leonardtown Middle School in Maryland. After speaking with HR office this morning and afternoon, it is official and I will be working on getting out there asap and will be teaching 6 classes of 8th grade mathematics.

Do you have a Master's? If not what's the starting salary up there? My wife graduates this Dec. The starting salary for teach's down here(FL) is $28K to $32K depending on district.

Congrats.

I remember my maths teachers year 7-11. (I dropped it at A level).

Year 7 = old guy that didnt help. Responed to questions like "I'm stuck" with replies like "Well you shouldn't have sat in glue then" and statements like "My pen's ran out" with replies like "Then run after it". So helpful.

Year 8 = Large guy who didn't teach us jack except how to remember which average is which and made us calculate how many grains of rice you could get on a chess board and in a reservoir. Kept a box of biscuits on his shelf that we would regularly nick.

Year 9 onwards. A guy who was alot more helpful, yet hit me on the head with my excersise book when giving them back out. Also made comments specifically to me like "Get used to saying 'Do you want fries with that?'" Oh the encouragement.

You're gonna have fun with this job Predaprince. And watch out that the crazy student doesn't give you a mental breakdown as a certain poster on this board may have done to one of his year 8 teachers.

While I should say Congrats, I should also send my condolences for teaching high school. It's like Kindergarten cop, only with less discipline and without the loaded handgun in your coat.

If that hasn't scared you off, then you deserve the position. Well met! :P

8th grade is middle school, and middle school is infinitely more challenging than high school. I did both in my four years of public school teaching, and I applaud your bravery, Predaprince. ;)

Oddly enough, I've left teaching to work in law enforcement...hrmm, maybe not all that much different...

Congrats, and just remember what Roosevelt said.

All kidding aside, hope you have fun teaching and that you actually reach a few of em.

In some places it is.
When we were on our Katrina Alabama exile my daughter was attending a school and was in 7th grade. It was considered high school there.

Because in Alabama you're pretty ed-ju-ma-cated to be in 7nd grade.

Sorry, that one was just begging to be joked upon. No offense to anyone from Alabama...I have very little room to talk, I live in Georgia.

Though Georgia is cooler.

Georgia has Atlanta, which is like Southern New York.

I've been through there on a trip to Florida. It took three hours to get ten miles. (Consider that in Michigan, you can get ten miles in about twenty minutes, if you drive just below the speed limit.)

LOL..
Actually that is not really the case, even down here there are a few schools that consider it like this...

1-6 = middle school
7-12 = High school

Some areas skip the Jr. high part.
Having a daughter in 9th grade it is scary enough, especially knowing that she can mingle with boys that are 17-18..

I don't have a Master's yet and my starting salary is low 40,000s, but it is a very high cost of living area and they know it.

It, of course, depends on what your wife teaches, but Florida is a great state for openings. I was also looking there, but Maryland and cold weather just fit me better.

Thanks to all of you on the congratulating!

I'm not like your teachers, Insurgent, as I treat my students with respect and understanding rather than treating them as "stupid kids" as what your teachers in those years sound like. I am a new(er) teacher, but I am ready to get into it and improve in the areas of my teaching that need it.

Good for you!

There aren't enough math teachers at that level who are actually trained as math teachers. You're going to do some amazing things.

Congratulations :D Sounds like you're pretty passionate about it man. They say that if you have a job that you enjoy then you'll never work a day in your life.

I haven't found that yet. Not unless I can get paid to drink beer and collect stuff.

Thanks for saving me the trouble of ejumacating Shadowman. ;) New York is New York; Atlanta is a giant Delta terminal with a Coca-Cola bottling plant and some fried chicken joints attached to it.

So was the guy I had year 9 onwards. It may have come out a bit harsher than it was, when I say he hit us (or more specifically me) with the book, it wasn't a hard wollop, just a playful tap. He treated us with respect (mostly) until someone pissed him off too much.

Give it a few years, you'll be turned to the dark side. 8) Unless your american schools are completely different to ours. Which might be true. We never got to leave when the bell went. It was always the teacher who let us out.

Still, as long as you enjoy it, you'll have a great time!

Yes, our schools are different. We don't have a giant meat grider and conveyor belt for our children.
