Futurama's Return
- Weapon: Stinger Missile
So has anyone caught any new episode(s) of Futurama? I haven't been able to since I'm not really home when they're on, but were they any good or is this just another Family Guy?
If anyone has spoilers, please warn. I haven't seen anything, but I just want to know if the episodes hold up like the first run episodes.

I like it so far. Despite the fears about them having a smaller budget, being on Comedy Central rather than Fox, I don't think the quality has suffered any. Matter of fact, my only real complaint is: As you know, Fry and Leela hooked up at the end of "Into the Wild Green Yonder". The first new episode undid that. It made sense in context, but I think it was kind of a cheep fix to fit in episodes that seem like they were written before ITWGY.

From what I've seen, unfortunately, it looks as if the show is going to pick up the crass/topical humor that South Park has moved into the past few years.

Futurama has always had topical humor. BUt I am enjoying the new incarnation. THough I admit the Fry and Leela thing is a little annoying...that was part of the old show I really liked.
It finally happened. The Chicago Cubs won the World Series. Yes, I cried.

No, not like South Park referencing the entertainment news of the week it hasn't.
The wii gets hot. SP talks about the wii. The new iPad/iPhone is in the news, Futurama gets cute about it.

A big story about a guy who dates a robot version of his comatose girlfriend, Futurama does that as well.

Are you getting at a point or just being argumentative?
Futurama does reference other material, pop culture, etc. Up until this point they had avoided making weekly jabs at whatever was currently going on, or going "hot", in the current real world.
All I'm saying is that I would appreciate it if they did not fall into the same schedule of cynical commentary on weekly news that South Park has fallen into.

Little bit of both. One, maybe two episodes about things going on in the news (Things that have been going on for YEARS I might add) does not mean they're taking a South Park style "jab at recent events" route. I just went over the episode descriptions for the rest of the season and it doesn't really have anything topical about it.

I would point out that each ep of South Park is done only a week or two before airing, so they can jump on stuff like that. Futurama has a much longer lead time; that episode was probably written and animated last year (witness the Susan Boyle joke).

Weeks nothing, South Park is usually animated only days before it's supposed to air. Production time for South Park episodes is freaky fast.

Well, the movies weren't exactly spot on for me. Between trying to make it movie, and then being able to take said movie and chop it into episodes really did end up hurting both the movie and the episodes. Thankfully, that's not the problem any more.
Right now, it's feel like it's still trying to get used to be a regular show again, but it's been only 4 episodes, so it could turn itself around quickly.
Also, I though only the music got hurt budget wise. Hell the software they used to make original animation should be pretty much up to par to cheaper animation programs that are out now. I think like 99% of the cast and crew returned for the new season.

I agree. It "feels" right to me.
BTW, the best of the movies IMHO was "Bender's Game". Instant classic for every geek in the world who ever played a paper-and-pencil RPG.

Yeah, I hate that. They did the same thing with the end of season 4 and the start of Bender's Big Score. For the most part, it looks like they're back together. Or at least I hope so. The office showed that the main character can get the girl, and still be a good show.

But in the episode with V-Giny, Fry and Leela kissed before she flew off with Zapp in the stealth ship. So it's not entirely gone.

The SP episode "About Last Night..." aired the day after election night, so that one was completed, literally, at the last minute. The fact that they were able to get it done in time is amazing (at least to me)

I hated it too. It took FOREVER to get going and when it finally did it was just a Lord of the Rings ripoff. The whole thing with the crystals didn't make any sense either.

To be honest, I doubt they stayed up all night doing it. They probably did the parts dependent on the winner twice(once for McCaine, once for Obama). It's how all topical shows(Family Guy, Simpsons, Daily Show, etc.) deal with elections: shoot 2 shows/write 2 scripts, then air the correct one.
