First off I'm not sure if they were the same toy line ,but different stories in the cartoon/comic.
The toy line(s)(?) were basically built it yourself robots that had alot of parts interchangably between kits ,but each kit was supposed to be a particular individual. The head area had a cockpit with a small (1/4 inch maybe) pilot but the cockpit was disigned in such a way that it looked like the "face" of the robot. Some of the bigger ones had some motors on them and could sort of walk.
The comic (only read one issue) had robots like that toyline in with the earth's surface had been messed up and humans had made these giant robots to rebuild after the war(?) (these would be the good guys and tended toward blue/white) and other ones (bad guys ,sort of) who tended toward red/black and were to defend earth from any/all invadors. Humans had become some sort of religious thing to the robots (who btw had what vaguely looked like humans inside the colored canopy of thier heads) and the guardian types were turning into tyrants. The good guys went into the great desert trying to find the humans and wake them up with some of the guardians chasing after them ,because thier authority ended when the humans came back.
The cartoon (I remember the toys to be amazeing simular) had some humans crashing on a planet and meeting some giant alien robots who had cockpits. The robots were what was left of 2 races who had fought a war (the bulk of the races were in stasis) but some of thier rulers had put thier minds into the robots. I think thier had been a treaty to end the war and fix thier damage to planet ,but it broke down. A humaniod in the cockpit can operate controls and make the robot do think that they didn't even know they could. The humans split between the "proper" leaders (good guys) and some mutineers (bad guys).
I would really like the name of these show(s) so I can find out the story. I only really saw the beginning of both and would like find out the end.
Help at remembering names from some old 80s cartoons/comic/toy line

The comic you're referring to is called "Starriors". It was published by Marvel, based on the toys made by Tomy. Some of the original toys may have been Zoids, or intended for a spin-off line to Zoids. You can find out more at
Meanwhile, the cartoon you're referring to is called "Robotix". Also based on a toyline, this one released by Milton Bradley, the cartoon was porduced by Marvel and Sunbow productions (just like the original Transformers cartoon, G.I.Joe, , Inhumanoids, Jem, and My Little Pony and Friends). You can find out more at the Wikipedia entry for "Robotix".
