i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a new job for me? i currently bag groceries/cashier at Publix (a grocery store) but that isn't going to well. i haven't had a raise in over a year (i've been there for two years)despite "outstanding employee" reviews and am basically sick of working there.:BANG_HEAD: i have applied at Target and Best Buy, and would like to work at some place similar to those (retail/chain). any ideas?

i forgot to mention that i am in college, so i'm looking for a part-time job.

My advice? Don't work retail. Or food services.

I worked as a cashier for a long time and quite honestly the customers will drive you insane, course I was working in a conveniece(arrgh how do you spell it) store. Now I work in a plant, where I get to work punching holes and shaping steel and aluminum parts. Its dirty, and smells wierd, not to mention mind numbingly boring at times. But its peaceful, and the pay's decent.Plus I actually get those mysterious things called vacation time and breaks. Getting to beat the crap out of metal things is also a nice bonus. Oh and you actually get holidays off too!!

Well...my last job that didn't require specefic education reqs was working in the starbucks cafe in a barnes and noble...paid ok, and was one of the more fun jobs that i've had.

Most fun i have ever had at a job was working at blockbuster...but that was also the worst paying. I'm sure the fun i had could be solely contributed to the people that i worked with.

Have you asked for a raise? If you haven't, present your time you're worked there and your positive reviews as evidence that one is due. If you don't ask, they usually won't give.

i've asked many times, but i get put-off every time. none of the managers seem to care, nor do they communicate with each other very well.

Then I'd go for Best Buy or Circuit City or something like that, even an Office Depot or something. I've heard that Walmart treats their employees like crap, so I'd treat that like a last resort.

Why ask for suggestions? It's your life, you shouldn't have to ask other people where you should work. Apply wherever you want and doing whatever you want to do.

Don't go through a temp service either, they pay you like 6 or 7 dollars an hour when the company they send you to is paying them about 13 to 14 for you. Plus they tend to put small print in the application that says if you work for them you can't work for any of the companies they do business with for 2 years after you leave them. So basicly your just stuck working for them and if you take a job with one of their clients they sue you.

I worked at Subway for two years while in college and I didn't mind it. Sure, it doesn't pay well, but it's easy.

Check your universities departments. You may be able to find a job in one of the departments in which your studying, and that can also add to your resume`.

I've actually heard Publix is a pretty decent company to work for. Huh, weird.

Pimping pays pretty well in my household. Only requirement is to know how to slap.

I've worked bookstores before, nive, quiet, comfortable job, until around xmas when illiterates people come in looking for cheap presents for literate people. "I'm looking for a book, i don't remember the title, author, or what it's about, but there's a doggie on the cover!' other than that i really liked it. also worked assistant manager in a sunglass hut, best do-nothing and still get paid job i ever had.

walmarts paid crap, but was easy to slack off at, I spent more time in the break room playing gameboy than anything else.

food service just sucks, plus i hate cooking.

now I mostly do commissioned art while taking classes, CD covers for local bands, book covers, etc, i basically make my own hours and pay, just have to keep a schedual to get things done by so sometimes it is alot of work, but more what i want to do anyway.

Get a bartending job, any bartending job, and just rough it for about half a year. After you get it down then go out and apply to some busier bars. You'll get stuck with crap shifts but bartenders usually have a high turnover rate so after a year you should be able to get at least one good night a week.

Bartending is the only job I know of where you can walk in to work broke and then leave with a few hundred dollars in your pocket. You do not need to be 21 to bartend. If there is a local bartending school near you just suck it up and pay the two hundred bucks. It sucks but it will ensure you start as a bartender instead of a barback, waitress/er, et cetera.

Plus it's fun as hell.

If you're all about being lazy and not wanting to be social get a security gig. There are like no requirements, the pay is usually decent starting out (between 9-10 bucks an hour).

It's almost holiday season, so you should be able to take your pick soon.

I second the bartender suggestion. My mom made bank when she tended bar. That is, if you feel you must stay in retail.
