I'm fairly certain that Optimus Prime's name is supposed to mean "Best of the Best." Both "optimum" and "prime" can describe the best qualities something has. Besides, he's not the first anything.

Well,Prime does in fact mean first, but to answer your comment, isn't he like...first in command? and he was also (according to war dawn) the first autobot.

Yes, you're right that it means first, but it also means best or of premium quality. Given that "the best first" or "the first and the best" sounds retarded, I prefer "best of the best."

to put things short,it can mean both,

On to the name slag, slag is a residue that remains when certain materials melt,(usually when purifying them) when a rocket gets sent to space, after Ignition, some slag usually remains within the thrusters as well.
(got this info from a documentary on Apollo 13)

of course, Slag has other meanings as well....I imagine he 'puts out' after a few drinks as well.
