does anyone have other suggestions as to why megatron has an interstellar jet mode, and the other characters have cometary modes?

Maybe he's not really Cybertronian. He might be an off-worlder who disguised himself as an alien.

I seriously think he just upgraded himself, though, unless, there's a line of Cybertronians that is created immediately as military or combat vehicles. He is Lord High Protector, after all. Maybe, just as the G1 cartoon had consumer goods and military hardware robots, the movie continuity has military hardware robots and...comets.

Weapon: Twin Sonic Cannons
*bumper sticker on Megatron's jet mode tailfins* COMETS ARE FOR PUSSIES

...Maybe he thinks traveling like that (via comet) is wussy.
Life can be pretty sweet when your alt-mode is a B-2 Stealth Bomber.

when bumble bee decends to that planet in the prequel novel to scout out ghost 1, he enters the planet in cometary mode...when starscream starts to atack him he transforms into a car with no need to scan anything.

based on ghosts of yesturday, the robots are capable of 2 alt modes...comet and cybertronian

With that in mind, megatron prolly entered earth as a comet and then got stuck in the ice in robot mode..upon melting he tranforms into his cybertronian mode with out having to scan anything...because there is no need.

Also let it be noted that we never see how the decepticons enter into earth...for all we know they dont need a cometary mode in the first place

The official hight from Wikipedia, and Michael Bay, if I'm not mistaken is around 34 feet or so. Sadly, they removed that little tidbit, so if might have changed. But I think anything more than 40 would be way too tall compared to Prime.

Megatron is 32 feet tall and Prime is 28. Blackout is the largest transformer in the entire movie though I don't think Bay ever mentioned his exact height. Jazz is 16 or 18 feet tall I, can't recall which. That's all I can remember from the interview.

Blackout is the largest.

Link #2

Orci and Kurtz aside the MH-53 is much larger than an F-22. The MH-53 is 16 feet longer, 9 feet 4 inches taller, and has a 28 foot wider wingspan. The width of the fuselage is actually wider than the wingspan of the F-22 by 1 foot, four inches.

Blackout is a beast.

Holy Hannah, Blackout is the largest. These are the words of Orci and Kurtz themselves. I'd drudge up the link but frankly I don't care enough to convince any you any further.

If you want to believe Starscream is the largest than go nuts. Don't be surprised when you see the movie and Blackout is twice his size though.

And did you not catch the measurements between the F-22 and MH-53. The Pavelow dwarfs the Raptor in every respect. It's taller, wider, and longer. Plus the Raptor is thin... because it's an aeroplane. The MH-53 is not thin like that. It's a transport. Transport means it needs cargo room. It carries an entire platoon of soldiers (38).

Like I said, if you want to believe that a helicopter whose length is double the wingspan of the F-22 is going to be smaller than hey, believe it. I'm a libertarian, I'm not going to stop you.

i havent read any of the interviews, but if thats the case, and blackout is largest, thats cool with me. Blackout is my fav decepticon from the movie afterall, so being the biggest can only mean some kickass scenes. But when I watch the trailer and see starscream crashing down onto the street and then see black out, black out just doesnt look as large as SS..oh well, i have no problem admiting wrong.

Ilkavadas is correct.

I didn't realise they had both comet and Cybetronian modes, though.

If what we've seen in the trailers is any indication, their size isn't going to be very consistent at all. They'll probably be in proportion to one another but relative to the cast and scenery they seem to have a habit of growing and shrinking. I know the folks at ILM wouldn't overlook something like that, but maybe Bay thought it'd be good for 'dramatic effect'?
