Molding/Casting, Etc Questions

Postby Autobot032 » Sun Oct 14, 2007 10:50 am

Weapon: Switch Blade Tail
I've always wanted to do repro pieces, repair broken joints, etc.

I've never known exactly how to do it.

I know you're supposed to build a box to put the mold in.
I know you're supposed to use Silicone for building the mold, and it's reusable if handled correctly.

Beyond that...here's where I'm lost.

Resins, mold making, what's the best, what's the most affordable, etc.

Also...can you make a reverse mold? (Say, for example, G1 Hound's mirrors. His right one breaks off and it's lost, but his left one's still intact, could you make a reverse mold of that?)

I know I should be more in depth with my questions here, but I haven't had any sleep, my sinuses are killing me, and this has been driving me nuts for a long while now.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I've been struggling with the same issue for quite some time - I really need a low-budget casting solution.
I have, however, had some success, at least with more solid parts (I've managed to repro Cyb. Hot Shot's head in resin, for instance), and I'm trying to refine the process.

I'm currently attempting to make a cast of Classic Starscream's nosecone (I want to replace Ramjet's 'conehead'-style bonce with the the original Seeker style), and I'm taking WiP pics as I go. If it works anywhere near as well as I hope, I'll post them up with a tutorial.

As far as budget's concerned, it's pretty low - I'm basically using a cereal packet, hot glue and liquid latex for the mould, and hardware store epoxy resin (Araldite in my case) for the casting material. Not exactly bank-breaking stuff.

I'm afraid I don't know offhand of any way of reverse moulding, though.
