I was browsing around, as you do, and ventured onto this thread.

It really got me curious about some of the IDW comics, as I have never actually read any graphic release related to Transformers.

Ah, no, I tell a lie: I read the Beast Wars Omnibus, borrowed it off a friend two years ago.
And another, but I cannot remember what.

How good would you rate Drift and/or Last Stand of the Wreckers?
Are they worth the buy?

Any other title you'd recommend?
(I'd rather avoid ongoing series, as finances are short, but you never know..)

I highly recommend All Hail Megatron it's IMHO the greatest TF comic I've read in a LONG damn time. Get the Complete All Hail Megatron deluxe hardcover it's $75 or you can get the four TPBs (that might actually cost you more in the long run though).

Drift is good story but kind of predictable. It's worth the price of the TPB.

The Last Stand of the Wreckers is good. It is IMHO at times preachy and the end is kind of depressing. Also the over-use of past references of Wreckers from the Marvel UK series as homages and in-jokes really borderlines to fan-wanking. It is also IMHO EXTREMELY over-rated. It's good but it's not great by any means but still worth the price of the TPB. FTR A special edition hardcover is supposed to be coming out on Jan. 10th 2012 (which is my birthday btw) with a lot of extra content. That would be the version I recommend buying.

The Ongoing series is pretty damn good. If you handle some of Don Figueroa's ugly redesigns of some of the characters (in particular some of the faces of the Autobots).

Now that you mention it, I had seem some All Hail Megatron.
I was intrigued, I'll have a look around.

Also thanks for the well made reply, you got me to do more research!

EDIT: Which meant I found a deluxe hard copy of AHM for £33 (=$51). Mine.

I'm a big fan of Mike Costa's ongoing series along with his Ironhide mini-series, which feels like I Am Legend... with Transformers :)

Drift arrived yesterday.
The story isn't bad, but I believe it's the artwork that made it worthwile!
And I do like Lockdown's appearance in it.

Last Stand of the Wreckers should be arriving tomorrow, too!

All Hail Megatron has arrived. It's massive, in hardcover.
Seriously. Enormous.

Hm.
What are people's views on Exodus and Exiles?

TFPrime is sort of getting me more curious about the whole thing, as I still cannot play War for Cybertron.
(Both for time and financial reasons, added to not running the right systems for it.)

Personally If you want my honest opinion.

I've bought & read most IDW TF comics & they are inferior in both writting & art compared to the Dreamwave TF comics.

IDW'S Most serious three negatives are as follows: (1) They keep changing writters on their TF G-1 on-going comics like most people change hats or outfits. Sadly the new writters re-write the previous stories, characters & plots/arcs. I don't enjoy having serious stuff get watered down by a new writter. (2)The art is not consistent within a year worth of TF comics for the G-1 On-going. often times new artist will draw mini series in the G-1 on going universe & draw completly different robots modes & alt modes. examples: 2010 "All hail Bumblebee" & 2010 TF G-1 On-going comic. (3) IDW Does a really great job of pumping/Hyping up the future TF comics issues/stories/arcs at various fan conventions like botcon, sdcc, canada conventions & so forth. Sadly most of the Time IDW fails to deliver what they promise. most of the time new writters climb on board & totally water down the stories or take it into more simplier/awful directions. recent example: Choas was suspose to be mainly starring the "D-Void & Galvatron & his men". now it appears the "D-void is barely gonna get one singular issues to tell it's tale. Galvatron & his men are not the in front stars of Choas,Megatron & Optimus are the main stars. PERSONALLY CHOAS IS THE MOST FAILED HYPED UP TF COMIC,I've ever had the dis-pleasure of reading.

So which Dreamwave series/issues would you suggest?

I re-read the first two Dreamwave mini-series with Pat Lee art and they haven't aged well. I remember being so excited for those issues and now I can't stand them.

Simon Furman & Don Figueroa's The War Within is incredible. Great mini-series and IDW repackaged that and the War Within sequel in an affordable omnibus. I haven't read the Dreamwave ongoing book with Don on art duties but people seem to like it.

The Transformers/GI Joe crossover book that Dreamwave was in charge of with John Ney Reiber & Jae Lee is a great read. It takes place in World War II and takes all our favorite characters and puts them in that setting. Jae Lee is not the traditional Transformers artist as his art is dark and moody but I liked it a lot.
