Welcome to the General Discussion area where just about anything goes! This area is designed to discuss all matters and does not necessarily have to be Transformers related. Please keep topics relevant.

Plasma TV for $4.88 @ Walmart

Postby Omnus » Fri Jun 29, 2007 11:48 am

I thought this was funny.

A man swapped the $984 tag on the TV for one that said $4.88 and paid for it in the self check out lane... Here is the link.

1) A theif is a theif, the same guy that will steal a TV from a shop is the same guy that will steal your wallet.

2) Crime like this affects you and I more than the company. Something like £6 billion per year is lost to shoplifters in the UK alone and that cost is recouped by uping prices to the customer. That means you're paying more so this guy can have a free TV.

So... Robin Hood's a bad guy? Big businesses are thieves. Exploitative thieves. Steal form a thief, you're a hero to me.
And there's a differenc between shoplifting and this. To be honest, his price was probably closer to what the thing cost to manufacture than Walmart's was.

How are businesses theives? Did they take something from you that you weren't willing to give?

So by your reasoning it'd be right to raid a florist because the flowers they sold don't cost as much to produce as they are for you to buy? If busineses like WalMart didn't make a profit they would close, if they closed you wouldn't be able to buy the things you do, if you didn't buy them demand would be low requiring less people to produce them and less materials being used which also require people to produce. To put it bluntly a country's economy is reliant on businesses like WalMart.

A country's economy is not reliant on huge corporations.
WalMart can make a profit, sure. But when their profit margins start looking like the income of small countries, that's just wrong.
And if they closed, I'd still be able to buy everything I needed. You know why? Because it'd give small shops a chance to compete again.
And that's why big businesses are thieves. Because they steal the market right out from under honest people's feet.

What's funny is that Wal-mart made a statement saying they weren't going to prosecute shoplifters because it wasn't worth the money. This guy, on the other hand, is a clear LP hit. At what point did he think people wouldn't notice the giant TV and a $5 receipt?

So again, a corporation is evil for making money?
Sure they'll close and you'll still be able to buy things, there's nothing stopping you from doing that now. I go downtown and there's nothing but small shops competing against each other. I fail to see your reasoning.
I go into Wal-Mart, I guess they're nothing but thieves in there too. Every employee, every person who shops there? Seriously, you're reasoning is crap.

So say you're selling the original Megatron. You decide that it's worth about $200 (I really don't know what the original Megatron is worth, so roll with me here). I walk up to you and hand you $20 (which is about how much he cost originally) take your Megatron and walk away.
There's your line of thought. Does that not sound like stealing to you. Because, according to the law, it is.

Me and my coworkers at my last job had jokes about this kind of topic. Customers would always ask us questions like "You're out? So the ad was just to get me in here?" or "Are you hiding any in the back?". It was annoying as hell. Don't yell at the employee, he's not a crook, he's a part time worker making rent for the month. And yelling at the store when they have no control over how much of a product corporate sends them is a pain too. But I digress...

UGH :-x [/rant]

I don't want to come off sounding like an ass, but I just had to reply. Don't take it personally ;) There is a simple solution, one I know at least one friend of mine lives: stop shopping at Walmart. If Walmart bothers you enough, buy the things you need at every other store you can, and try to recruit friends and family that feel the same way to also do this. It may not make a huge impact, but over time, who knows? I've tried to shop at Walmart less ever since I quit several weeks ago. Though I still have to buy a few things there that I can't find elsewhere.

I'm a little disturbed by your reasoning in the second sentence... if someone creates a product that becomes a huge success and ends up making billions of dollars because of it... he is not entitled to any of that because his income is greater than another's? (By no means am I referring to athletes and their ridiculous salaries... that's a whole other world of nonsense.) I may not have much love for Walmart, but they will only be as successful as they are so long as people still shop there. It's like that saying, put your money where your mouth is. People need to take action instead of (verbally) complaining or just getting mad about something that bothers them. Even worse is complacency, which is a big problem in this country...

Actually, that's incorrect (as far as I know). My girlfriend worked at Wal-Mart just this past year and she was told they wouldn't prosecute anything under $25.00 because it was too costly and too much of a hassle. I guarantee they'd prosecute over something as expensive as a Plasma TV.

Which brings me to my next point....Wal-Mart's the one at fault here. They really dropped the ball. The simple fact that he even got as close to completing this as he did...proves to me that one hand doesn't know what the other's doing, or simply doesn't give a damn.

Have you seen a Plasma or LCD TV in it's box? They're massive. They won't fit in a cart, they barely sit over the top of it, and to top it off..they're bulky and heavy.

Someone, in one of the many departments he passed, on his way up to the Self Checkout...must've thought "What the hell?!" plus, when an item like that is scanned, the security strip must be deactivated, so they must've seen him jostle it around trying to get that strip.

Yeah, blame the thief for his part in it, no denyin'. Blame Wal-Mart too, because if people were actually doing their jobs, he'd have never made it out of electronics with it.
NOTE: Realize that I am not a perfect Christian, nor do I profess to be. I apologize if anyone's ever offended by me, I'm not perfect. Don't hold my posts and opinions against other Christians.

Um.....Well obviously he did get caught so someone was watching something. Perhaps read the article before commenting on it because with that statement it seems like you are just making a halfass knock on wal-mart.
