Please help identify a transformer from my youth.

Postby Rebel Raven » Wed Aug 29, 2007 10:57 pm

Back when I was but a youth (In the 80's most likely.), my Mom bought me a box of transformers. Atleast I'm fairly certain they were transformers.
The box was in Japanese (Fairly common in my time growing up in Hawaii.), and my memory is fuzzy on the matter.

I don't remember much, but maybe enough to help.

The entire group combined into one large robot.

In the box was a large gray robot that turned into an elephant and also into a tank.
The top of the transformed mode had a large canon with 2 smaller ones on the side of the big gun, and the front had articulated tusks and 2 smaller guns. Also what looked sort of like a cockpit with a large orange clear piece on the head.
This comprised most of the body of the combined form. Extendable arms and legs increased the size.

One of them was a black robot that turned into a panther which could also turn into a tank. The tail swiveled into the tank's canon.

Another was a gray robot that turned into a lion and into a tank. A memorable feature was 2 yellow pieces that unfolded and became the mane of the lion.

They all shared a common tread design where the rear legs, and the front legs tucked under the body to make the treads.
The latter 2 became the feet.

The head was made by a robot that turned into a pterodactyl (Or something like that.). Did not turn into a tank as far as I remember.

I do not remember any of their names.
I do not remember if there were 2 more or not.
I do not recall what faction they belonged to.

I'm pretty sure I recall the thermal insignia, or atleast the stickers.

Any help would be appreciated.

Well the only lead I have for you right now is Magnaboss, containing Prowl, Ironhide and Silverbolt.

Seeing as Prowl and Ironhide are the only Lions and Elephants respectively that I know of, and that they do combine into a larger robot.. so it might be them.

If it isn't well... good luck on that. :)

Here's a few pics to help.

I'm afraid that isn't it.

Each robot I described looks very robotic for their animal forms. Angular, even downright boxy in nature.
And those look a bit too modern to have been out in the 80's.

I do appreciate the effort and hope your well wishings helps though.

The lack of identity for my childhood transformer set has bothered me off and on for quite some time now.
I hadn't found a community quite this large to ask until recently.

I do remember a few more details. The Panther robot had a red cockpit design on the head and silver claws and a gray chest where the head folded into. In robot mode the rear claws became the feet. The front claws folded back and 2 small hands folded out from the forearms.

The Elephant Robot had silver toes, and in robot form a longer silver foot is folded down to add appearance.
The elephant head made the chest of this robot, and the head swiveled up from the body.
The fists were spring loaded (But did not fire) and were pushed in and to the side to lock it into place. There were 2 pegs on each side of the wrist for locking into 2 spring loaded catches where the panther and lion attached to make the feet.

The Lion, panther, and elephant had smaller wheels in the treads that ran along their lower legs and forearms so they could roll when in tank mode.

The birdlike transformer that made the head of the combined form was red white and black as I recall.

They were made form a mix of metal, and plastics.

I haven't seen the Lion or the Bird in a while, unfortunately. Maybe they were lost when I moved ages ago.

I'll try to find the panther and/or Elephant to try and get pictures to post to aid in the search, but they're packed away smewhere so I'm not sure when the pictures will come.

Are you sure it's not the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers original Megazord? There was the original color scheme, and then there was a special all black/gray scheme as well.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zords_in_M ... er_Rangers
You could snap on the Dragonzord for an even bigger robot.

Hell, it could even be a Brave toy. (which was inbetween TF lines in Japan.)

I dont think that was a TF. It sounds like a KO of some sort of something. It could have been part of some Sentai series.

I'm thoroughly certain it is not power rangers. They hit american shoes in 1993 (atleast according to the page linked to me.). A good 6 years or more after I lost track of the mentioned pterodactyl, and lion.

They indeed transformed into individual robots. I'm not sure Power Rangers could caim that anyhow.

I'm not sure what "KO" is.

The only dinosaur in the set was the head, which was a pterodactyl. The other 2 I remember were an elephant a lion and a panther.

The body was made of the robot that turned into the elephant/tank with limbs that extended on sliding mechanisms.
Panther and Lion made the feet.

The transformers I speak of had likely predated Hun-Grr's release as a toy.
If not they were close to his release in 1987.

They might not have been transformers, but I'm pretty certain they were.

Well then it might not be a TF combiner. It could easily be a bootleg or a knockoff of something else, with a TF logo slapped on it.

Although, it could be Predaking?

Well, that isnt all entirely true.

First off he said he lived in hawaii. Hawaii gets stuff from japan like they are japan! So it was a japanese toy.

Second, "power rangers" is part of a long time japanese series of TV shows called Sentai. Sentai was invented in 75.

Third, the animals he described are typical in sentai and it is normal for the robotic animals to turn into humanoid robots and combine together.

Lastly, a KO is a "knock off". A fake.

It is likely that the toy you're thinking of is not a TF, but it is possible.

Yeah, It was most likely japanese. I couldn't make heads or tails of the box's writings even though I was able to read back then.

I'll admit I was wrong about the age of Power rangers as I've only seen the US version.

I'm not to well read about Sentai.

Thank you for filling me in on KO.

I'm still fairly certain it's a transformers set, but it may well be too obscure.
It's obscurity has me thinking it might be a knock off.

I doubt, somehow, it's a case of mistaken idenity. A gut feeling.

Hopefully soon I can find either the Elephant or the Panther and capture a few pictures to help the search.
But even then I'm not sure it'll work.

And you are correct aswell in that it's certinly not Predaking.

Well hot diggity damn. That's a nice combiner! Why doesn't MMPR ever get a Zord set that nice? (I realize it's not a PR toy, but considering Bandai makes it, you'd think they'd use it...)

I clicked the link on the page, showing the 2003 version...the '85 wins out in terms of coolness.
