So what do we all think of 2012?

Welcome to the General Discussion area where just about anything goes! This area is designed to discuss all matters and does not necessarily have to be Transformers related. Please keep topics relevant.

But it takes a very long time, almost two million days or 5200 years. Assuming we have the correlation of dates right, this will be the only time we ever get to see it roll over.

I'm not sure those numbers are correct. Could be wrong, but if you have the time, check out the links posted above.

As for the date thing, yeah they don't, but it translates into the 21st of December. It's like... I heard that the Islamic calender puts them in like the 1500's currently? They're different calenders but they still translate into each other.

I'm not sure on that either so don't go sawing me in two just yet ¬_¬

They're just rounded estimates but from what I've read the last cycle started sometime around 3113 BC. 2012 being the end of the current "Creation Cycle".

On topic; I'm not expecting anything to happen. Tezcatlipoca and Quetzalcoatl might have some kind of epic battle. :P Though I doubt it.

I dont want to get in the middle of a argument but to be 100% accurate we really dont know if the Mayan calender was intended to role over again in 2012 or not.

There is not enough of it surviving to be sure. When the Spaniard's and the Church conquered the Mayans most of the text were destroyed by church priest because they were considered to be made from dark magic's .

But there are inscriptions and predictions beyond 2012.One such prediction can be found on the Tablet of Inscriptions from Palenque in which the King K'inich Janaab' Pakal the great.

The prediction was that on a future date...the eightieth Calendar Round anniversary of his accession will be celebrated that date translates into October 21st 4772.

Thats almost 3,000 years into the future.

For all we know the Mayans may have had an other calender written that did not survive.

Now who's Mr. Know it All?

Now, to be fair, maybe I don't know everything that's going on, but, to be absolutely fair, neither do you, considering how this all happened several thousand years ago.

I'd be more inclined to trust sto_vo_kor_2000, Tekka, and Tammuz on this...mostly because they didn't start their posts by saying they learned it all on the History Channel.

I would honestly take a thread over TV any day.

Thanks for the complement.....but some of what I learned I did indeed learn from the History channel.

But its not my only source.I was a history major at NYU with a interest in past cultures and lost civilizations.

Theres no reason to be fighting over this.

Simple fact is that we really dont know what the Maya thought about the end of time and when it would come.

There's not really many of their writtings that survived the "Spanish" conquest and more then that 12/21/2012 is nothing more then our best guest as to the date in question.

The Maya had a weird way of measuring time.....they considered a full life time to be about 52 years and made their predictions based on that fact.

To make things more complected the calender was to end 5,125 years after the believed start of the Mayan culture or the Mayan people. The problem for us then is trying to figure out whether the Mayan believed that they were the start of all human life and began counting from what they thought was the begining of life or were they counting from the what they thought was the begining of their Society.

Most experts believe that they started counting from the begining of their Society and that date is around Augest 13th 3114 B.C.

But if the experts got that date wrong then the date of 12/21/2012 is also wrong.

To date 12/21/2012 as the end of the world is directly tied to the date August 13th 3114 B.C. If the experts got the date of the beginning of the Mayan world wrong then the date of the end is also wrong.

Now I'm not saying that the experts got the begining wrong I'm just saying that such experts have gotten other dates wrong before.

Did the Mayans actually predict the end of the world, or did they just create a calendar that happens to roll over on a certain date?

If something happens, it will be a coincidence that the Mayans could never have known about.

They did make a prediction that shows the earth being destroyed by a flood thats caused by a great serpent and one of their goddess and the words "Black Earth" and "Black on high" being repeated a few times.

Theres a missing section of the prediction but most of it can be made out.

This vid explains a lot but its about 2 hours long. But you can skip to the end.
http://www.livevideo.com/video/Paranorm ... -deco.aspx

But I'm not really sure you can say that the Maya thought of it as the "end for all time" sine the made other predictions for years that are well past 2012.

They even made a prediction for the coming of the "New Age" but what that is or means is unknown.

Postby Tammuz » Mon Apr 28, 2008 6:16 am

anyone going to produce archeological papers on this?

no?

pity

the reason 2012 is all apaocalyptical is becuase the last in the mayan calander it's written as 12.19.19.17.19., now according to mayan legend their last age failed(destoyed by the gods, etc) on 12.19.19.17.19. according to the popol vuh, and the god created a new age(our age, which is the fourth age), now just cos the last age failed on this date does not mean our age is due to fail, especially since the first 2 ages didn't last that long either.

next it's only new age bullshit pushers(yeah i'm looking at you homeopathists) who think it's the end of the worls/civilisation, the mayan's just thought it would significant event, which in contrast doesn't seem all that shocking the turning over of out calandar has always seemed signifcant, how many people celebrate new years? was our millenial one slighty bigger than normal? and as i mentioned earlier every year something significant happens.

also if we go back, what happened in 3114 bc? that being the last time the mayans reset their calandar(note that the calandar isn't reseting becuase it reached this figure, it carries on, except the last time the mayans decided they'd start again)

Well you gotta ask yourself. What kind of significant event we're talking about. Yes, something significant happens every hour, day, month, or year. But how significant are these events? From a geological standpoint, they aren't, at all. Historical standpoint? History books down the line may mention 9-11.

2012 could just be the Mayan Millennium, it could mean nothing at all. It's highly possible this is the case.

But then it could actually mean a great change will happen, it could be the end of an era in civilization(other than Mayan), it could also mean something happens in 2012 that sets the domino's tumbling for a great change.

Personally, in these last fews months I've seen a whole lot of crap that can't be explained by current science. I actually ended up taking care of what can only be described as a demon. I've noticed an increase in "paranormal" activity, while most of the stories "OMG I GOT GHOSTZ" can be explained away by hype from T.A.P.S., seeing an increase in 'activity' in places, where stuff will actually try to hurt you. I can't help but wonder if we got something big coming.

Granted I'm no going to stockpile more food or water than I have already(gotta keep extra water and food on hand in case of a bitchin' winter), nor am I gonna turn into the naked guy wearing a barrel screaming down main street that the end is coming.

I don't think anyone in this thread is saying they're scared for the end of the world, and that they'll hide in a cave. If they are, well, no offense to them, but they're idiots.

And now I've forgotten where I was going with this....

Oh well, if something big as hell happens, that would be awesome, we can all say we were there.

Exactly

Of course, the election actually occurs on November 2nd, and inauguration wouldn't be until January 20th, 2013. So if we accidentally elect Satan, we can just kick him out and reinstate whoever wins this year or something...

...Have we ever had to kick a guy out of office before he was inaugurated? I'd have to read the constitution again, but I don't think they cover that.

But then, look at most of us Americans, then who we elected last election.

If Satan becomes president, we'll probably change the constitution so he can stay in office.

You wouldn't believe how hard it was for me to refrain from adding in the "giant twinkie" quote from Ghosbusters.

But seriously, it was what could be described as a demon, it tried attaching itself to me, to get to one of my friends, and I ended up, destroying it, I think.

Also, if nobody has ever had a paranormal experience, having a demon(or anything else for that matter) try to get into your head feels funny. You get light headed and you get a nice pushing type pain/weak electrical tingle on the back of your neck underneath the base of the skull.

It was a really neat experience.

When we were moving into our apartment, me and a bunch of other people were all having lunch in our emptied house. (we were cleaning up any loose ends) then we heard what sounded like a girl singing.

It couldn't have come from next door or outside. We were all surprised. I have no doubt that the house was haunted. Our apartment might be, too. Every so often, in the middle of the night (When I'm the only one who's up) there will be an audible *click* on the wall between my room and my dad's office.

I sometimes hear voices calling for me, which is kinda strange.

i also woke up in a hostel once seeing how a human like being which was made up of white light and floated over me disappeared slowly.
The strange thing is, up to that moment I was scared of the place, but after I saw that, lets say ghost, I felt totally safe and all, I even dreamed of my dead uncle telling me a new story.

Where'd you get the proton packs and ghost traps,Ebay? :)
Joking aside the paranormal is something I'm more open minded about as several years ago my Mom came rushing into the house in a considerable state of distress and when I asked what was wrong she said she'd just seen what appeared to be the ghost of my Grandad in our back garden.
She was concerned that it meant that something bad was going to happen to my Dad but a few hours later we got a call from one of my sisters informing us that she was pregnant with her first child
Even a natural sceptic like me has to take a step back and consider things a bit differently after seeing a member of my family so "spooked".

They got meds for that now :o)

The strange thing is, up to that moment I was scared of the place, but after I saw that, lets say ghost, I felt totally safe and all, I even dreamed of my dead uncle telling me a new story.

All jokes aside I have had many experances's like this over the years. To me its pretty normal.

I'm very aware that there's something living in my house other then my family.....what ever it is likes to turn the water fausets on and flush the toilet, likes to hit the buttons on my voice or light and sound toys.

The activities steeped up to the E.V.P. level last night thou......I started to get what sounded like kids playing in a play ground from my pc last night.

I even closed all windows and killed the power to my modem and the sound presisted till I told it to cut it out.

As soon as it stoped the water in the bathroom started running again.

But I'm not really sure you can say that the Maya thought of it as the "end for all time" sine the made other predictions for years that are well past 2012.

They even made a prediction for the coming of the "New Age" but what that is or means is unknown.

You forgot the link. :-P

And how did we get on ghost stories?
Buy my RiD toys! They're awesome, I promise!!!!
