So who uses AT&T DSL?

And how difficult was it to obtain?

Dumb ass Comcast just surprised me with the news that my internet was a promo deal all this time. Now they want $60 a month.

And AT&T is currently not available in my area. But how does that work? Is it just plain not offered, or can there be only so many people using it at one time? I seem to remember hearing that it was in my area and just not "open". So is that the case? Did any of you just have to wait for an "opening"?

Am I screwed then? Does anybody have any advice for someone just starting out in the real world who appearently can't afford decent internet after all. Do I just go to dial up?

My dad got it like 3 years ago. It was some online deal/package, and it included the router I think. As far a installing, we did it ourselves and it was pretty straightforward.

Sounds like its a premium package. I used to work for a cable company, and our Premier 12mb download was around that price. Check and see if they have a slower download speed. The next level down shouldn't put much of a bump in your internet speed, if it's noticable at all, or you should try and see what the lowest download speed is. It's usually around the same price as DSL, and will either have the same download speeds or be a little bit better.

Look into that before you switch, ATT likes to lock people into contracts, and it's a crappy internet service to boot.

They should have explained that a bit better. I know when I sold all my packages I carefully explained to my customers that what they're recieving was an intro price. It saved me a lot of headache when customers called back to bitch that we "lied" to them.

How crappy? Because I'm pretty sure I'll be getting some version of it. Comcast has nothing but the one internet package. AT&T has several nice looking ones. What do you mean they "lock you into contracts"?

Huh, that's strange. Usually Cable providers offer more than one speed of internet. Oh well, Comcast was a sucky provider here in Georgia too. I don't know how many times we've received calls from a customer in a Commcast area that wanted different service.

DSL is a grab bag. I've seen locations that have great DSL service, and some locations have really crappy ones. It's horribly unreliable, and can interfer with your phone, forcing you to put filters on all your phones. At any rate, you say you don't have it in your area, and unfortuantely there's precious little you can do about it until they decide to develop the area you live. That only leaves Dial-up...and well, yeech...only if you absolutely have too.

That being said, you said earlier that it's not offered in your area. That means precisely that, they simply haven't developed your area, which means no one in your area has DSL from AT&T. The only people that can actually tell you for sure is ATT. If you're lucky enough to eventually get AT&T as DSL in your area (smirk...) then watch out for the contracts. These guys can be sneaky, and give you a great offer (free modem, all that stuff) but stick you in a year or more contract. What's more, if you don't get out of it within a certain window of opportunity, you're stuck with it automatically for another year. That's been my experience with AT&T, and that's why I absolutely refuse to give them any more of my money.

I have AT&T DSL. It's $29 a month. I was in a contract for the first year, but now it's month to month.

I've never had any trouble with the Internet, while using it.

What's crazy though, is that I'm not allowed to have AT&T local phone, but I can have them for long distance and DSL.

I have Verizon for local and I friggin' hate them, but I used to work for them so...

I have had DSL for about 2 years now and I am happy with it. We ordered it and within 3 days I had the modem.
Not a sheeple.
Think for yourself, don't let the magic TV box and social media do the thinking for you.
Question EVERYTHING!!
Just because you have a youtube review channel doesn't make you special.
I look forward to attending a Botcon soon only to settle matters with several idiots in person (yes this is a threat).

We had AT&T DSL for a few years, and it was pretty reliable.

We have Charter Cable now, though, because it's (Apparently) cheaper if you get the Phone/TV/Internet package.

I go through a smaller company, TDS Telecom. $60 a month gets me local phone AND DSL.

Not sure what speed DSL it is, but it's pretty fast. :)

Despite what the Charter Ads would have you think, Cable Internet is only very slightly faster. I can barely tell the difference. Both run at about 11MBps.

That's pretty fast for DSL, I've never known any company to offer more than around 6MBps.
