According to Wikipedia, no.
So, if you're going to trade in your GC for a Wii, I'd keep one or more of the controllers.

I can confirm it, no. The GameCube controllers are required to play the games on the Wii.
Weird thing is, the remote's not backwards compatible...but the GC controllers can be used in place of the Classic Controller (which connects to the Wii) so you can play the Virtual Console games.
Although, the GC controller doesn't have all the features that the CC does.

Damn. I gave my GC and controllers, including wireless Ravebird(?), to a friend 2 months ago, and kept the games. So it looks like the GC controller will play most all the virtua console games. Should I return the Wii classic controller(havn't opened it yet) and get a wireless GC controller?

Yes, cause you'll only really need the GC controller, even for the classics.

True. You only need a GC controller, but I would hold on to the Classic controller anyway. And that's only because I like how it looks like the SNES controller(the best controller of all time), and I really dislike the GC one because it's too small and uncomfortable. But I don't play any GC games on my Wii. Once I got my Wii, the GameCube was dead to me. The best game on it is RE4, and I'll wait for the Wii version to play that game again.

Cool. Thanks for the info. I think I'm going to return it and get a wireless GC controller, simply cause it will save me money. I'm going to call the local places today that sell used stuff and see if they got one.
Any recommends on the virtual games?

I'd say get both. Many of the virtual console games aren't optimized for the GC controller so the button mapping is awkward (example: Contra III has b for jump, y for shoot, and X for weapon switch). A lot of them are 90 degrees off from what you'd expect (because the button mapping for the CC and the GC controller are to the letter, meaning A button is A button on the other although they aren't in the same place physically)

I have a question about the Wii classic controller: what does the middle button on the top do? It looks like it's meant to release something that's supposed to attatch to the back of the classic controller, but I've heard virtually nothing about what it is or was supposed to do.
Oh, & for VC games.....R-type 3 is pretty fun. it's one of those games where you'll be ready to throw something because it's hard yet you can't put it down because it's so fun.
I'd also suggest Actraiser, Any Zelda game (particularly 2 or OOT....my favorites), Bomberman '93(can't beat a 5-player bomberman game), anything mario, and Ninja Gaiden (another game that's nerve-racking but fun).

There's supposed to be an upcoming feature where you can connect the CC to the Wiimote.
