There were talks about doing a Green Lantern show, but Cartoon Netword decided on Duck Dodgers instead.

great decision, no doubt.

i saw SMDD, and it was okay. it did a good job of condensing A LOT of story into one movie

This whole post is kinda spoilerific, so if you want to avoid such a thing, please move along. This isn't the post you are looking for. Move along.

Okay. If we're talking comics, Superman did indeed die. His life functions ceased and his soul/essence/mind left his body. They even had to kitbash a way to try jumpstarting his heart using the powerpack of a STAR Labs air soldier. As explained later in Reign of the Supermen by Eradicator, it was only through sheer luck that he ( The Eradicator ) was able to capture Superman's essence and attempt to restore him to life. Also, as stated by the Eradicator, it would be nearly impossible to perform the same feat again.

I think the one that explained it all on the comics was Doctor Occult during a trippy voyage through the death and rebirth that happened just after the defeat of the Cyborg, but it's basically as you said.

I always found the "Pa Kent has a heart attack and convinces Superman's soul to not enter the light" kinda corny.

Yeah. I just finished rereading the whole series thanks to that giant hard cover compilation they just released. The Pa Kent substory was included in it, even though it's generally considered to be really, really lame in comparison to the rest. I'd have preferred if they'd instead have added all the Funeral for a Friend snippets that were scattered around the various books at the time rather than have the Pa Kent story. I remember the few panels dedicated to the Funeral from Batman being especially cool.

On the other hand, they were awesome enough to include the Green Lantern issue where Hal Jordan kicks the everloving snot out of Mongul out of vengeance for Coast City. I was afraid they'd skip that because it's recapped in a later issue, but it think DC realized just how important that issue is to the DCU ( especially considering what's going on in current continuity ).

The compilation is highly recommended for anyone wanting to get pretty much everything important to Death and Return, though, even considering it's $75 price tag.

Yeah, I remember lots of comics around that period had the characters wearing black bands on their arms. In fact, Batman during Knightfall was wearing one for a while.

Death, Funeral for, and Reign of the Supermen are as a whole one of the most fun (and, when you were reading them as they came out, extremely exciting) story of the 90s. And to think of all the repercussions... Starting with Emerald Twilight.

i thought we were talking about the movie, in which he doesn't die, but his heartbeat slows to a crawl so that his body can repair.

Weapon: Mace
I loved the movie myself. It wasn't perfect, but I think they did a pretty good job condensing the story down into something that's cohesive and watchable, plus the voice cast does have some pretty compelling moments, which is good considering how some of the casting choices seem a bit odd. There's also some pretty shocking (and heartwrenching) moments throughout the film even after Big Blue drops. I didn't think the music score was too shabby either. And given that this movie balances a love story with a LOT of action, I honestly think that this movie is what "Superman Returns" SHOULD have been (and almost was), minus all the Bryan Singer/Michael Daugherty/Dan Harris sap and all the Jon Peters/Tim Burton/Nic Cage weirdness (the latter of which they do poke fun at at one point in this movie).

The special features are a blast, too. There's a comprehensive documentary about DC's writers and artists developing the original comic story arc (which in a sense does kinda hurt the movie itself a little bit, but I can understand why they put it on here), and the commentary starts off a bit stilted but gradually picks up in energy. Of course, the real treat here is the preview of the Justice League: New Frontier DTV (I liked Bruce Timm talking about them wondering who they'd cast as Wonder Woman, and he mentions that when someone brought up Lucy Lawless, they all looked at each other and said "DUH!" :D ).

As for the movie's deviation from the original comic story - let's face it, by its nature (meaning over the course of four titles) the whole "Reign Of The Superman" portion of the story was long, overloaded with character developments, subplots and guest appearances that otherwise weren't relevant, left too many loose ends to effectively close up in a filmed version of the story, and generally would be ill-suited to adapt as it is even if you made it the final chapter of a trilogy of films. I frankly was pleased that there wasn't a buttload of other DC heroes all over the place.
I got yer new Captain America right here!

:BOT: Just watched it. Initially I was worried since I really would like it to be set in the Timmverse. But I got really into this movie and forgot about the other series.

Definitely got emotional when Lois visits Martha Kent. And absolutely shocked Mercy was killed!

I know the funeral would have been cool with other superheroes present but we've already seen that in JLU in "Hereafter" (and that's vaguely the Death & Return of Superman).

The comic book might be cool. But there's no way they can cram 50 issues (or how many comics it was) into 80 minutes. And I still think the movie holds up well. Very cool DVD.

And I love the Kevin Smith nod :) :CON:

Check this out, The day before i watched SMDD, i was watching Super Friends Super Powers show on Boomerang and they showed an episode that i didn't remember(i haven't seen this show in about 20 years), but was very surprised to see. It was "The Death of Superman". This series came out in 1983-84, mind you. In this episode, Superman and Firestorm are exploring an alien planet and Superman is exposed to way too much Kryptonite and turns green and "dies". They have the funeral and everyone is wearing black arm-bands with the Superman insignia on them. The Super Powers team goes to the Fortress of Solitude and is greeted by Superman's robot, that alerts them of a Kryptonian "trance" he can put himself into to recover from serious injuries. They go and get him while Darksied is attacking Earth and bring him back to life to stop Darksied yet again.
I flipped out when i saw the SMDD movie, cause it was almost a drawn out version of that episode, well....., with some changes. And i cant believe the arm-bands being in that Super Powers episode. It never occured to me when i bought the Death of Superman comic back in 93', that i had seen the arm-band before( i wore mine to school  ).
But, yeah, all in all, i liked the movie. I think i'll go and watch it again right now.

Seen it, I really liked it.

I for the most part appreciate the fact that it wasn't toned down too much. Doomsday was a actual threat when you see that he was shown snapping necks left and right
