To be honest, I don't see what you can do other than pretty much whatever you already have been. "Something big" may well be coming, either in 2012, or before or after. But without knowing exactly what that something is, there's not really any way to prepare for it.
If it's a global catastrophe, like DZ's magnetic shift, or a nuclear conflagration, then there's little chance you can do much to avert it unless you have the ear of the powers-that-be - and the knowledge of what you need to tell them. You could hole up in your bunker, but that'll only really delay the inevitable.
If it's a smaller-scale disaster, like the aforementioned WTC event, then you might be able to avoid the worst of the effects by being somewhere else. But even then, you'd need the insider info to know what was going off. I'm sure if it had been more widely known what was going to happen, a few more people would have called in sick that day. But without being able to stop the event itself, the aftermath probably wouldn't have been much different - there'd have been a few less casualties, but I daresay the response from the US government et al would have been similar, so we'd still be dealing with roughly the same consequences now.
I think I'm rambling now.
The point is, unless you know what to expect, you can't really prepare for it. You can play the role of the prophet of doom, but unless you know what form it's going to take, no-one's going to benefit from it, so they'll hardly thank you for it - you'll just be depressing everyone for nothing.
The best bet is to do what you're doing, live life the best you can, try to have as few regrets as possible, and roll with the inevitable punches when you need to.

Enjoy today and try to make it better for someone else.
I second that!

I swear I remember you saying you were 14!
When you're 6'2" cops don't ask how old you are.
They also don't catch you.
Well, if you don't drive like a madman....
But uh, you didn't here that from me.![]()
Anyhoo, back on topic. I don't care who says what about 2012 or 3012. Right now we have issues much more important than some predictions which have been proven wrong time and time again.
Beleiving them is like giving up.
I don't care, since the world is coming to an end, I'm buying you 2 bottles of Jack and a BigFoot!
If anyone deserves it!

So I say, do what you do, respect your neighbor, and enjoy it while you can.
Just keep in mind the profits always claim doom is upon us, but your probably still gonna have to go to work tomorrow!
True as hell. Nicely put.

Re: The Coming Storm. A Philosophical Question
First off, I sure as hell hope nothing happens in 2012, since that's when I get out of high school. As for the whole WW3 thing, that's been a possibility since the end of WW2. All I know is that humanity seems to have it's good eras, and it's bad ones. I know a lot of people will say it's America's fault, but you know who it really is? THE WHOLE #$%&ING WORLD! Also, it should be noted that Something world-changing happens every year. Hell, something world changing happens every day!
