Why is cryptozoology considered sham science?

I never said we were some kind of secret society. I just don't give people's names out without their consent. They can announce themselves at any time, but I just don't feel that I can do it for them.
The current expedition to the Congo is to search for any signs of Mokele Mbembe, as well as ask the natives if they have seen one since the last expedition.
If you want an example of what we've done, here's one. The Jersey Devil. That legend lasted for hundreds of years. We researched any sightings we could find, and came to a conclusion. The witnesses have in fact been seeing a real creature that matches descriptions of the beast. What people have been seeing is called hypsignathus monstrosus. Case closed. We weren't blind believers of the Jersey Devil. Nor are we blind believers of anything else. We are just trying to prove one way or another that a creature either exists or doesn't.
I hope this cleared up any misunderstandings.

If they have written books I would think they would want their names exposed.
hypsignathus monstrosus is a type of African bat and does not
appear to have hooves as the Jersey Devil is purported
to have. Also I found nothing on any of the "Official"
Jersey Devil websites stating that he has been identified. Do you have a link to the official finding? I would like to read up on it.
I'm not trying to rag on you but you are raising some
arguments and am just seeking some answers.
Also, I believe in the Mokele Mbembe.
Now go find me a Thunderbird
I have to edit this because I found a site that exposes the
thought that the hypsignathus monstrosus is the Jersey Devil,
although they are poking fun of the picture of the bat,
the the cryptozoologist.

Dosnt that help to disprove the whole theroy on cryptids, that fact that this monster "Jersey Devil", is nowt more then a large bat? I thought you guys where ment to find and prove new species, not just disprove them. And who cant tell the differnce between a bat and a monster, all of the descriptions I read of it have been totally differnt, aside from the fact it has wings, you must have known it wasnt real.

Um, no, finding an actual animal to match the legends supports cryptozoology. No mainstream zoologist is going to go about that kind of research, so it gives cryptozoologists a reason to exist. There's nothing that says cryptozoology is based solely on the discovery of new animals and the confirmation of cryptids. It's the study of them, and research can prove or disprove these things.

You could not be more correct. Kudos to you

And let me tell you, Hypsignathus Monstrosus is the Jersey Devil. It is a bat with a head like a moose. Who wouldn't think that was wierd? And they are African bats, but it is highly possible that they came to America by stowing away on ships that sailed from to Africa to America. If the ships were carrying fruit, then those bats would definitely have flown aboard. They are fruit bats after all. And they are known to curl their feet. There are pictures on the net. When they curl their feet, an tracks they leave look like hooves. And they have creepy red eyes like the Jersey Devil reportedly has. There seems to be no reason to doubt that this creature is responsible for the Jersey Devil sightings. It certainly makes more sense than the "migrating storks" theory that the "real scientists" came up with.

These people exist because human curiousity makes us want to explore the strange and unknown. Same as with people that hunt for ghosts. We have people that spread stories and swear to witness strange animals/apparitions, and those among us that want to explore further do. They don't want to sit and count new bug species. They want to find a mysterious creature some swear to exist.

Choas Bringer, calm down, for hell's sake.
You're acting like we on Seibs are responsible for the world not taking crytozoology seriously. If you don't think so, then why are typing in all capitols?
People don't take Cryptozoology seriously because it puts the conclusion before the hypothesis. They set out to prove Bigfoot is real, they "believe in" the Loch Ness monster. That's not science.
Now if this organization you belong to doesn't do it like that, then fair enough. Hats off to them for applying the scientific method to their hypothesis that something might be real, and then coming to the conclusion that it was such and such established animal.
But that's not what most people see of the field.

I like cryptozoology, I really do, I study it(as much as can be studied anyway). It's a nice thought thinking that creatures like the bigfoot could be out there, or Nessy, or the dinosaur living in the Congo.
But honestly, if you think you and other cryptozoologists deserve respect over actual zoologists, biologists and such. People who have gone to school for years to study animals, to find new species of animal, bug or bird. You should be slapped.
In all honesty, what does it take to be a "cryptozoologist"?
An interest and a web connection. There is no degree or discipline for cryptozoology. You can't go to college to learn that stuff. You just need a video camera and the web.

It seems to me that a lot of the cryptozoologists' findings can be chalked up to coincidence.
But who cares if people look at you with scorn? People look at everything they don't do with scorn. People who watch sports look at comic book collectors as losers. Comic book collectors laugh at atheletes for complaining about only making five million a year to play a game. Weight lifters laugh at actors for spending all their time making make believe.
Anybody who spends more than 30 seconds on something is automatically criticized as "having WAY too much time on his hands." So do what you like. What's the harm so long as it hurt people who don't want to be hurt.

Nope, up to the 1990's mate!
It was the 1890's not the 1990's, there was a new type of chimp found in the 1990's that is bigger than humans though (Mountain chimpanzees).
Also in the '90s a valley was discovered in Vietnam and several new species of animals were discovered mostly small ,but included on ox species.
There have been many species that used to be thought of as mythilogical and are now accepted. The squid comment... yes a giant squid was found and they called it Kraken. The scientists amoung "cryptozoologists" are looking to prove/disprove the possiblity of potential real animals that are the source of the legends/stories not some sort of magical creature.
The reason (IMO) that cryptozoologists are not taken very seriously is that the "group" includes some nuts and that is what people see. They ignore the cryptozoologists who are doing real scientific study. Of course other branches of scientific endeavor include people who aren't really scientists.

I never thought of cryptozoology as a sham science. I always thought sham science had something to do with the people that design bed linens.

I don't see anything more that can be added to this thread.
Let's continue this in an actual moon-landing hoax thread and let this one die.
