Your custom Robot Wars

Postby Evank_Horizon » Sat Sep 08, 2007 9:09 pm

There is a nice video game series in japan called Super Robot Wars (a.k.a. Super Robot Taisen). In these turn based strategy games hordes of licenced robots fight eachother. Two of these games were released here but contained only original robots.

I want you to list the sources you'd like to see in your own Super Robot Wars games. But you're not limited by copyrights or by contry where it came from. So other games can be listed too.

SRW usually only includes anime with super robots but there have been some execeptions like Escaflowne (Not realy a robot) and Tekkaman (Exosuit). Also there's almost always original characters in the game. Either custom gundams or completely original set of characters with their own storyline. You can add your own stuff there too.

Here's a nice little file that lists every entry untill 2005. At the bottom of that file you'll find a rather large list of animes that could potential become part of next games. It could help you build your own dream team. But don't forget you're not limited to that list.

Here's my own list:
Transformers G1 s1, s2, Movie, PM Prime
Macross (robotech season 1), Zero, 7, Plus
Gundam, 0083, Z, ZZ, Char's Counter-Attack
Dancougar
StarWars Transformers
Armored Core (psx titles)
Mazinkaiser
Grendizer
Shin Getter Robo: Armagheddon
Big O
Escaflowne
Giant Robo
Harlock Saga (no mech in there. but there are nice spaceships)
Golion (Voltron Lion Force)
Xenogears
Gunbuster
Evangelion
GekiGanger III
Defenders of Space (That includes a perfect ripoff of G1 Inferno toy and Grendizer splited in two bad guys.)
My own PhoeniX storyline

Now your turn...

Actually, SRW includes a lot of real-robot series as well; Gundam, Macross, Full Metal Panic!, and Martian Successor Nadesico are a few.

edit: Well, you listed some of those. The games make a distinction between "real" and "super" robots, though.

Yeah I know that. By the way, I finnished 2 of them and got half through 2 others. Real robot is realy just an in-game term to make distinction between the kind of the Gundams and Combattler V. But the are a lot of mecha that stand in a whide grey region between the two. I a way there a few gundam series thaat could be called super. And there are extravagant robot who now have more scientifical explanation behind their capabilities that could be called Real Robot because of that. It was OK when the series started on the gameboy but since then the world of mecha has changed.

Just checked the roster of robots in this one. It's only the gamecube version but a little prettier. I'm astoned that The only getter in this title is Neo Getter. I'm not crazy about this game's roster. But I guess they tryed to renew the franchise. But I wonder why they keep bringing back Gundam 0080 and 08th MS team. The Mobile suits in those are generic and un-interesting.

SRW W seems a lot more interesting with Tekkaman, Tekkaman Blade, Golion (That's Voltron by the way), Gundam SEED, Mazinkaiser and Shin Getter. (It's a shame Z Gundam isn't there though... Or any UC gundam for that matter.)

on the 0080 and 08th MS team suits:
i agree, they soon get relegated to the background once the more powerful mecha appear

If I were to make a roster, I'd limit it to american based mecha shows. So basically:

Transformers
The '07 Movie
The Beast Wars Cast (sized up of course)

The other robot properties
Mighty Orbots
Gort (the day the earth stood still)
Big Guy and Rusty
Those guys from Robotix
Some guys from Mech Warrior
Super Robot Monkey Team Hyper Force Go
Any number of mecha from Dexter's Lab.
The Ancient Mech from Samurai Jack

And of course, Megas XLR
he'd be like the Dan Hibiki of the series, but exceedingly powerful. If you guys know of any more American based giant robots, it would be interesting to see what I missed.

Well robotech is pretty much american. Sure it used to be japanese but they rewrote it so much it's almost american. Anyway they did a Robotech sequel movie: Shadow Chronicles. I tryed to watch it because I'm a big Macross fan and I was curious but I just couldn't stand it. Stopped watching it when it got to Scott Bernard (or whatever his name is...) The Robotech games too are all american.

Aside from that you realy never know when an american show with Mechas in it is realy true american stuff or not. I recently learned that Power Ranger was not just inspired by a japanese series but was actually Zyurangers in japan. (Though they did shoot most of the scenes in america...)

There are Mechas in the world of Warhammer 40k but that's british. Battlemech was american but they stole japanese mechas to do it. In Matrix there are some mecha-like things. The AT-STs in Star Wars Might be considered mechas. In the command an conquer series there are also some kind of mechas. In most cases, american mechas are not the center point of their source material.

Gee even the original transformers series was animated in japan by TOEI animation. And they used a few japanese mechas in it.

Your best shot is to add all japanese series that were aired in america. Most were very americanized in many ways. Tranzor Z (Mazinger Z), Starvenger (Getter Robo), Voltron (Golion), Grendizer, Gundam Wing... Replace all the rip-offs in Mega XLR by the mechas they were ripped from and you already got a bunch.
