I'm prety sure that they had at least come up with that much of the mythos before the toyline and cartoon went full swing.

The Last Autobot is the only Transformer who's face looks like the Autobot faction symbol.

I see the similarities with Prowl, but this one seems to fit more.

I'll be repeating everyone with this: the Autobot Symbol is based on Prowl's face, and the Decepticon Symbol is based on Soundwave's. Don't ask why, that's just the bottom line. Several characters have a face based on either symbol however, including Prima, The Last Autobot, Vector Prime and The Fallen in the Movie. Those are the Real World reasons, ignore the reasoning in the fiction just once.

For the G2 Symbols, look no further than Pyro and Clench, the Leaders at the time of the symbols' creation.

Chromedome, Chromia, Elita-1, Firestar, Moonracer, Fortress Maximus, Omega Prime, Nova Prime/Prime Nova, Nexus Prime, Vector Prime, Nemesis Prime, Prima, Unicron, Ultra Magnus, (Literally all of the U names) Rodimus Prime, Sentinel Prime, Zeta Prime, Grimlock, Swoop, Snarl, Slag, Sludge, and those are just names I bothered to remember. And most of them were major characters. I mean, I'll pass Unicron and Ultra Magnus off as accidentally omitting the U-section, and most of the names as being a bit more obscure, but how can you forget actually listing the Dinobots, or Rodimus Prime, or Sentinel and Zeta? (Who both recently got more than their usual share of screen time)
