High price or not I have to get this guy. He looks absolutely incredible and just oozes personality. This is definitely the definitive Megatron, the third party comparison photo I think really shows it. Mp-36 is just so much more streamlined and proportionate than the other one, who's head is much too small and who's body is too chunky. I was going to wait a bit before getting him but I think he just jumped to the top of the priority list

It looks pretty tidy to me, nothing really sticks out, everything is folded nice in the shape of his body. Hopefully it's as good in-hand cause he wasn't cheap.

Besides, Megatron is supposed to be panely.

I say this with all sincerity, that is an infinitely better-looking back than MP-5.

I'm passing on Megatron. He's just too expensive for me, and I just got Mightron. Just not enough here to justify it.

Since the first time I saw the prototype, I was hooked. Chose not to watch transformation video due to spoilers. All the pics so far continue to prove I made the right choice in purchasing this figure. And getting it for $50 cheaper just sweetens the deal.

And yeesh, that MP-05 comparison... there's debate about if MP-36 is better or not than the third party offerings, but he's certainly better than that old geezer. Time has not been kind...

I will say, all of those are pretty great looking Megatron figures, but there is only one, that when I look at it, it screams, "I WAS DESIGNED BY TAKARA!". Can you guess which one?

It's definitely the one I like the best. Because I like the way Takara designs robots the best.

It's AMAZING how Takara "might" have gotten clues from the 3rd PARTY makers to hone their design into this final product. In house most of the time beats the opposite. They HAVE access to more source materials most of the time or should it be ALL of the time?

Back then it was Takara playing catch up with 3rd PARTY. Now? It's 3rd PARTY now that is doing the catch up!

Besides the seeker mold having the reported floppy shoulder syndrome, beginning with Laserwave, almost without kibble over Quakewave. ( Though the seeming obsession to get rid of kibble had a bad result with the Tracks mold).

Then the awesome IH/Ratchet mold which floored the others (TFC Old Soldier). Who'd have thought? Then comes Inferno and the next 2 iterations and now this?

It's good that they focused more of the anime G1 show. I wonder if they'll try to release a 1986 Movie head version in the feature? A Transmetal black version or even a Megaplex version sometime in the future?

I must agree, while aesthetic is rather debatable and I'm certainly no expert on the subject; there is just a certain... feel the official Masterpieces have that just make them more appealing than third party offerings to me. I dunno, maybe it is the fact I know it's official that's tricking my brain and giving me biases, but even so I can't deny that MP-36 just has this look and feel to him over the third party offerings to me. It's weird.

Oh yeah and I'm totally expecting Takara spurt out a repaint or two. If they don't do a black or gold version I will be amazed. Has there been any MP so far that hasn't had some sort of repaint, actually? The only ones I can think of would be a couple recent releases, and I'm willing to bet even they won't stay that way for long. Heck, the only specific one I can think of off the top of my head is Cheetor, and there's no way we aren't getting Tigatron or Shadow Panther from him...

There have been plenty of designers at Takara over the years, but they all adhere to a continuity that is distinctly Takara. Like many things Japanese, their aesthetic is steeped in tradition. I see it in this Megatron.

Black Convoy, Platinum, Shattered Glass, Evangelion, three BAPEs for some ungodly reason... if anything that mold's been used more than most MP toys. And that's saying something.

The others I'll totally give you. Though Ravage isn't much more than an accessory and Hot Rod and Shockwave are both fairly recent.

That said, I really want MP Howlback already...

well if you count just takara releases its eva and nemesis. the bapes were requested to be made for the store so technically they count and technically they dont.ofc i could be wrong.

Mp ravage was repainted twice (linkn park and yotg version) and mp10 was repainted at least 6 times.

But yeah, dont jnow how they would reuse star sabr.

Hmm, yeah; just looked it up and it has been over a year. Maybe they're just slowing down on repaints and retools aside from the obligatory ones like Grapple and Ratchet? Then again, they are making Artfire and a friggin' toy-accurate Primal. I don't get it mang, surely the black repaints of the Shock and the Rod would have been so tempting to just make and throw at the fans?

I suppose, perhaps... The third parties do straddle a bit outside the manic cartoon-accuracy and do their own thing, especially evident in Despotron's nigh-Dreamwave proportions. I kind of hate saying that honestly because it's above and beyond an insult to lump anyone in with Pat Lee.
But even then it's not like I'm especially loyal to the old cartoon design; I didn't find many of Megsy's designs that especially appealing aside from Animated and modern IDW. (for anyone wondering, the body he took on just before Dark Cybertron is my favourite design for the character so far)
So... I don't really know what it is.

I will say this for MP-36 though, and something that does edge him over most recent MP molds like Inferno and Ironhide - ironically due to all the moving parts and paneling, he doesn't suffer from the overly-bland cartoon accurate surfaces that the MP direction has gone in as of late One of the biggest flaws people have been complaining about actually nullifies one of the biggest flaws people have with most recent MPs!
