All,

Anyone know how to identify the difference between the china original release and the asia release by looking at the packaging?

I have seen 2 different packages. One with the words masterpiece in white letters on the front and one with the same letters but black.

Anyone have any clue what this variation in packaging means?

The original MP-4S Convoy Sleep Mode was part of the "Welcome to Transformers 2010" promotion, and has non-standard packaging. You can check out a gallery of it here:

A similar release is MP-10B Black Convoy, which uses the newer Masterpiece mold but lacks the trailer. Standard packaging style:

If the packaging style doesn't match, then it's a fake.

So its safe to say the box with white lettering may be the asia reissue? See below

It's all in the lighting. The letters are reflective, so they appear as different colors in different lighting. The two releases (Japan and Asia) are completely identical, save for the bio card: the Japanese release has "Serial Number in Japan: ####/2010" while the Asia release has "C1- ####/2010".
