Metroid: Other M

Postby Sonic Wing » Sun Aug 29, 2010 2:16 pm

I need opinions. Ever since the game got announced I've been having really high expectations for it, then people started getting it early and started reviewing it...badly. I haven't played it but people have complained about it a lot.

There have been complaints about combat, exploration, suit/weapon upgrades and such. All of this makes me doubt that the game is worth buying, but I'll never know if I'll live with the problems or just downright hate them when I play the game.

I dunno if I should rent it or buy it. I'm a fan of the series so I should buy it, but what if I hate it? Rent it of course, then if I love it buy it. It sounds like a simple decision yes, but I still don't know what to do D:!

Opinions?

If your indecisive wait a while and read the reviews. More often than not those previews are biased and based on earlier versions.

Reviews so far have been very positive. nintendo power and Gametrailers both rated in the 8-9 range. Much Praise to simplification of gameplay without detracting from action. 1st person has minor quibbles but you get used to it. The weakest part, at least from the reviews I've read, is the story since Samus has tons of voice-overs and there's less feeling of isolation and mystery this time around.

I'll definitely pic it up, but not until I've finished the stuff I'm already working on.

I wondered where the Other M topic was!

I was reading a review the other day put out by a non-fanboy, who'd downloaded Other M illegally and played it on his Wii via homebrew. His review pointed out how it was a tad clunky switching from 3rd to 1st person, but on the whole is review was very positive and it sounded like he enjoyed it.

Personally I can't wait for this game to come out over here this week. I always enjoyed Fusion and the like more than (the admittedly awesome) Prime series, since the action was faster paced and more intense. There is something very elegant about Other M's 3rd person shooting which could never be done in 1st person; there's no way you could build an FPS to move that fast and aim that well and just look so good.

I am thoroughly excited for this game and you should be too, regardless of reviews. It screams 3D Fusion to me, and I can't wait to get knee deep in the action.

The funny thing is- I just thought on this- that the stuff people claim makes Metroid great-- slow exploration and study of the environment, was never a big part of any metroid game besides those in the Prime series. Sure I'd love some more Prime style Metroids, but not if it decreases my chance of getting more traditional Metroids.

To finish, I'd like to say I'm still waiting on my badass 3D side scrolling Metroid for DS. Mario did it, why shouldn't Metroid!

I've gotten the game, and I am highly impressed with it. It is more linear, much like Fusion was, but exploration is far from dead, and it is still possible to get lost (which is a fun element in the Metroid series, since it's part of exploring). The game really captures the feel of the originals, and is very fun. The switching to 1st person view takes careful timing during intense combat sequences, lest you take unnecessary damage. But the 3rd person action is quick, and very satisfying, especially the brutal, but oh so awesome melee finishers. The game is not easy though, it can be very difficult at times, especially during bosses, as one good hit from them can take out a vast chunk of your energy.

My only real complaint is the scripted 1st person segments where you have to look around for something to examine, and can't get out of that view 'till you find what you're looking for, it can be annoying. The music isn't as memorable as past games, but the Ridley theme and main menu tracks are true orchestrated masterpieces. Take this from a hardcore Metroid fan, who is open minded, and willing to try something different. I highly recommend it, and am positive that you won't be disappointed. If you still aren't sure, then renting it first is your decision alone. But regardless of the negative reviews, (especially G4TV's), this is a solid Metroid title that keeps the essence of the classics alive, and is a very satisfying experience, well worth the wait. :)

Picked this up a few days ago but haven't had much time to play it. Enjoying it so far but definitely irked a bit by the presentation. Graphically, its excellent. Gameplay wise, it's really fun. Story wise... Um... Please make Samus shut up. #-o

Haha, she talks quite a bit in the beginning, but calms down a bit later on in the game. The talking doesn't bother me much though since she talked a lot in the Manga too. :P The Manga was good though, it was all about her origins exactly.

Just finished with the sector zero bit. Man that was pretty touching.

SPOILER

Fighting Nightmare from Fusion was super awesome, massive nostalgia hit! As was fighting Ridley! Pretty damn awesome game I must say. Though I wish it was longer... Ah well, will have to play hard mode then I guess!

One thing I wish though. I wish that sector zero was in hard mode. Modified so that you can kill the metroids eventually. But playing a recreation of Tourian in 3D would be immense.
Maybe next time right?

Yes indeed

SPOILER

Fighting nightmare was fun, didnt really expect him to get back up.
And ridley was AWESOME, dodging the tailswipes and all made it all look ohhhhhhh so cool =D. Yes it should have been longer and hard mode will be a painnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn.

A recreation of tourian would be too much for our mortal eyes =P, also it would be pretty hard...those metroids thaw too fast D:.

If they make another metroid similar to this one, they better let me spam missiles in 3rd person hahaha.

Btw...Any objections, Adam? =)

SPOILER END i guess...

Really? I haven't played Other M, but I have played Fusion, and Nightmare made me want to tear me hair out. It was "fun" difficult, it was "make me think someone on the development team didn't know how to design a boss fight" difficult.

It isn't about practice, it's about Nightmare, and in fact nearly ALL of the later stage bosses, being an absolute pain in the ass who can take off gigantic chunks of health with their most basic attacks.

Sure? I've played a helluva lot of 2d and 3d Metroid, and I never had any trouble with Fusion's bosses. And isn't that the idea of a boss? An enemy who's a far greater threat to you than the average foe?
It'd be kinda silly if Samus was this ultra-awesome walking tank against everything. I'd go so far as to say that Metroid Prime 1 had this problem, right up until the final boss. That's when things got interesting.

I don't think you'd be such a fan of Other M if that's what you don't like. Even standard enemies do a lot of damage. Although with the implentation of the rather excellent (imo) sense-move counter that's not such of a problem.

Unless you genuinely suck, in which case you probably deserve to die :P

I understand that much, but the later-end bosses in Fusion take it WAY too far. And it's not just Nightmare's ability to deal damage, it's the difficulty of hitting him in the final part of that fight. If he doesn't approach that ladder in just the right way, it's nearly impossible to hit him, and if you have to readjust, then he's already made contact with you and taking out more health than you can afford.

If a boss in your game can take out most of your health by sneezing at you, you need to rebalance a few things.

I wouldn't say I suck. If I knew were the nunchuck for my wiimote was, I could have Metroid Prime Trilogy beaten a third time over by next week. (Mostly because I never really go for 100% completion...)

Admittedly the particular arena used is probably the worst possible, it's so small that there's not really anywhere to jump to to get out of the way. I dunno, I just remember bashing that missile button like never before against the final stage. I'll play it through again when I get back to Hull and get hold of my copy, let you know what I think.

SPOILER
Y'know I always figured the jelly monster face was a result of the x-parasite infecting Nightmare after some other gelatinous beast, like with the researchers.

Surprised to see that wasn't the case when fighting it in Other M.

SPOILER END

Finished the game today, just finishing item pick-up and the post-game stuff. Couple of things to be excited for I know are coming up.

Overall, I enjoyed the story and game itself very much. The controls were great and once I'd adapted to the new style I loved them to bits. Hopefully this is a precursor to more Metroid games in the same style. TP to FP takes some getting used to, and could be a bit tighter in the changeover, but that's something for futur games to work on.

The story was good, and I didn't mind Samus' big mouth. I liked that she actually spoke in this one (kinda had enough of Nintendo's famous mutes), and the script was good. Cutscenes epic. Look forward to the next mission!

My one gripe is that I wish it could've been longer. Finished the main game in about eight hours, would like it to last around 15-20 hours.

Enjoyed that the Bottle Ship is essentially the BSL station from Fusion, and fighting similar bosses in each was great. Also sets up some of the Fusion bosses nicely.

The heavy use of Zebes monsters was brilliant, and the abrupt start to a major battle in some cases was well done.

SPOILER

Was kinda expected that the Metroid project would be included on the Bottle Ship as well as the BSL station, since the games are so similar. Just a shame that they took the cheap route and ejected sector zero/New Tourian like they did with the Metroid lab in Fusion. Was hoping for more than that.

you know, i thought the jelly face was because of the x parasite too...but who knows haha. Also nightmare isnt THAT hard in fusion, i think the spider thingy was harder, ridley was a pain too.

I just finished getting a 100% of items and ill be playing hard mode soon, still need to finish corruption again though. And yes it should have been longer, but then again i finished fusion in 2 hours, zero mission in 2 and a half and super in like 4 hours? cant remember. Then again, ive played fusion like 10 times, zero mission like 3 and super 1 or 2, and even though they were short they were awesome =D.

Overall, Other M is awesome :D

Besides a random Metroid my friend had, never played any...but I've been reading about it, I'm confused...

So Ridley here is a clone? Either way...showing his forms was a good idea, and cool one...
Though, Little Birdie murdering someone was a bit overkill...it just has feet anywas o_O

They should show Kraid next in my opinion.

I'm also confused as to when other M happens...

It takes place after Super Metroid, but before Metroid Fusion. Nintendo has been VERY reluctant to continue the story after Fusion.

Warning, don't read if you don't want to spoil this plot point. The reason Ridley is a clone is because when at the beginning of the game, the quarantine officer says that he "gave your suit a polish", when in reality, as we find out some time later after the Ridley battle, that they actually took all the particles of enemies such as the infant Metroid and Ridley's remains off of the armor to salvage some of the DNA (blood, etc.) to use as a means to clone them.
