Convotron wrote:I just watched the 3 part Collection DX video review of the figure and I must say, it's very impressive. The aesthetics aren't for everyone as it's based on an anime 21 years old. I like it but I don't love it. I haven't watched the anime it's from so I don't have any sentimental attachment. However, the toy engineering is pretty darn amazing. I'm also surprised by its stability considering the amount of die cast in its construction.

I think that on a pure toy engineering level, SoC Voltes V beats MP Grimlock, which, as far as I have seen in video reviews and galleries, doesn't "wow" me on a toy design level.

I think I just watched the same review...dude didn't even show the combined alt mode, though. Anyhow, can't say I was impressed. I admit, I'm least impressed with Grimlock from the MP line, but it still smokes Homestar IMO. This reminds me too much of ROTF Devastator, only not as cool looking...and I'm not a big fan of ROTF Dev. This thing did look to have a crap load of accessories, though, if you're into that sort of thing.

Would someone please educate me on why MP Grimlock deserves its praise? It just looks like an MP sized version of the G1 toy...MP Grimlock doesn't look like it displays anything extraordinary in the toy design. I do like its leg transformation, though.(What is it with me and leg design?)

With MP OP and the MP Seekers, I see great improvement in toy design to give great representations of the character models in both alt and bot modes. I can't say much about MP Megatron as I don't own it but it looks like more of a hybrid of the G1 toy and character model.

It's a lot like that, but with awesome articulation and detail. I wish it had a bit more to its transformation, but other than that it's MP quality the rest of the way.

The character model of Grimlock in the Cartoons/Movie was very similar to the G1 toy. This does limit the designers a bit, Unlike G1 Starscream, Megatron and Prime where the character models and toys differed significantly. Since the Masterpiece line aims to reflect the G1 character design as best as possible in both modes, it was rather inevitable that MP Grimlock would be less of a 'grand leap' in design than were the others. That being said, the attention to detail is fantastic. You pointed out the legs, they are brilliantly engineered, and the eye swapping gimmicks are very clever, and the articulation with one exception in the shoulders is awesome. In other ways it is just a scaled up G1 figure. As I love Grimlock, I think that it is a brilliant 'Masterpiece' representation of the character. I believe any Masterpiece version of Soundwave or Shockwave would suffer the same 'problem' as the character models were again, very similar to the original toys.

MP Megatron? Gun mode, Gorgeous. Robot Mode, brilliant, very loyal to the character model, although limited by space making it rather skeletal. I would have tolerated a thicker, less realistic gun mode if it meant sturdier, thicker legs. The transformation is very complicated and very clever. The materials used are crap. It relies on tiny plastic tabs far too much. MP Megs is a brilliant bit of engineering, I think they went just a bit too far with it, resulting in a gorgeous toy that is just that bit too fragile. Mine stays permanently in gun form, as if I had it displayed in robot form, the next earthquake would send it off the shelf and shatter into a million pieces.

Thanks for the info, guys!

Yeah, I think the MP figures of OP, Seekers, and Megatron really surprised me because the original toys were fairly off character model due to toy design limits at the time. With G1 Grimlock, it was, in my opinion, the perfect representation since it was so close to the character model. I think that's a big part of the letdown I had with MP Grimlock because the G1 toy didn't have so much to fix in comparison to the other 3 MP figures.

The leg design of MP Grimlock really caught my attention because it's such novel toy engineering.

With the first three MP molds they had to create something entirely new as the G1 toys were so inaccurate but with Grim they just needed to add articulation and put his head in the right place (it's too far back on the original). Although they didn't need to change the toy design much from the original Grimlock is the most poseable of the MPs. It's not really worth the huge price tag but for some reason I really like him.

Finally got my Voltes V GX-31V. Way too expensive. Paid almost $200 for it. My wife asked me if it was really worth it. Personally, I love it. But yeah, it's pricey. MP Grimlock is next!

Grimlock.
Not a sheeple.
Think for yourself, don't let the magic TV box and social media do the thinking for you.
Question EVERYTHING!!
Just because you have a youtube review channel doesn't make you special.
I look forward to attending a Botcon soon only to settle matters with several idiots in person (yes this is a threat).

Good choice! Once you get Grimlock, you will see how it is no comparison to Voltes V.
