Not exactly sure when Sentinel became a character. I do know that he has been in some of the comics (I'm currently reading through all of the comics), but most recently, he was a part of Transformers Animated. The snow plow truck with the massive Jay Leno chin in Robot mode who was also a total prick of a character that I was hoping so much would die a very slow and painful, and VERY explicit on screen death. He was also a part of the War for Cybertron game if I can remember properly. I haven't played the game yet, so I'm not 100%.
Sentinel Prime was in fact introduced in the G1 comic series. That is the only continuity he's in besides his hot-shot jerk version in Animated.

Yeah, Sentinel's also in War For Cybertron. As the story goes, he's succeeded by Optimus Prime.
