As for why Hasbro makes a lot of tanks? Well...

1 ) Kids like army men, and tanks are the biggest, toughest componant of any army.

2 ) Tanks are blocky, with plenty of different ways to transform them (unlike most jets which get by with some variant of the "Veritech/Valkyrie" transform scheme).

Jets are better and more lethal - anybody can learn to drive a tank, but flying a jet takes skill.
But yeah, jets have some parts that cannot be as well concealed in robot mode -such as the wings- Also, tanks have even less variety - the tower either goes to the back of the robot, or on the arms.
