How is it that pan handle means "someone who prospects" or "a beggar" in the US, but it's a slang for an hard-on in the UK??? How does that happen?

For those who would like to know, a "swashplate" is the part that holds the main gearbox of a helicopter in place while simutaneously spinning the rotorhead. Hence the helicopter being named Swashplate.

That's a good theory. I had automatically made an assumption based off the term "Hard Pan", for hard packed dirt, but I like your idea.

Oh no no no no...We "Yanks" would inadvertently get ourselves in WAY too much trouble. Did you know that "spunk", as in "My, she certainly is full of spunk" totally does not mean the same thing here as it does on the other side of the pond. I had to find out the hard way. And no, I'm not going to mention what it really means but I'll be more than happy to stand back and watch the comedic results of someone asking Amelie.
