Can't the Kaiju just create another portal thing?

The Kaiju's creators were destroyed. Even if they survived and did, we could just re-nuke it. You saw the labs, weve got plenty of Kaiju "code" lying around, and after what happened, Im sure more Jaigers will be built just in case

Easier said than done. The kaiju creators could have several level fives ready for their opening salvo if they ever breach our dimension again.
Anyway, as for the film in general, yeah it was good. It didn't totally blow me away, but I was pretty enthralled. Despite being CG, the Kaiju's and Jaigers did have a presence and life to them(particularly the Kaiju's, some good facial expressions) that reminded me of guys in rubber suits, which is a good thing.
I liked that the fight scenes were fast and brutal, with little to no shaky cam unlike Transformers. Still, I wish Crimson Typhoon and the Russian Unit weren't destroyed so early. Would have liked to have seen one of them in the final battle, where they could have been dealt with.
Overall, it's a film that stands among the best giant monster movies, one I'll sure buy on Blu-Ray for sure, and I thought was better than King Kong '05 and Cloverfield.

Picked up Crimson Typhoon and Knifehead for my son today - pretty nice figures.

News is that a sequel is already in the works.
http://moviepilot.com/stories/1045313-g ... some-ideas
I should say, that some of the story points that GDT talks about as possible ideas for the sequel, I was already suggesting to my brother as we were leaving the theater.
I HAVE to acquire this once it hits dvd.
Don't worry, there'll be more. There will also be 18' figures. They're doing Gipsy Danger, I just hope they do AT LEAST one Kaiju in the 18 inch scale. Knifehead is totally my favorite.
Also, you are all forgetting the best part! How often do you get to see a Newtons Cradle swing via robot punch?

Re: Pacific Rim
I think if I'd seen it when it first came out, before all the fangirls convinced me this movie was going to rock the very foundations of my world with its awesome....I might have liked it more.
Didn't hate it, really, and the jaegers and kaiju were fantastic.
Could have done without YET ANOTHER 'white American man saves the world' plot, though, as well as the wth stereotypes of women, Asians, Russians Germans and nerds. And the Mansplaining. And was Becket's swagger and unshavenness supposed to make him attractive to females? If so, FAIL.
And also, protip: if you are having a helicopter land, it's beyond the realm of physics that an umbrella would not at the very least invert and shred.
Oh, of course, unless you MUST have your stereotype 'mysterious Asian girl with umbrella' trope.
CC, I liked the dog, though.

I was worried this might happen. It's a really fun film, but as soon as people start hyping it the need for it to be great starts to pile up...

I'm glad you still enjoyed it though.

I think the stereotypes and tropes are actually a vital part of the movie, after all this is supposed to be a homage to the old-school Kaiju movies, with a good deal of giant mech anime slammed in for good measure. That stuff kinda made it feel "right" to me.
And I don't think criticizing a film for its helicopter/ umbrella physics is a valid point if everything else in the movie goes against physics, like the monsters themselves.

Not to mention the fact that it would be impossible to build a robot of that size. AND the cargo boat that Gypsy Danger was dragging through the street. Impossible, but awesome as hell.
