So much to say...
Kudos to McCain. That was an excpetional concession speech and you have represented yourself, the Republican Party, and these United States with the class and dignity we have lacked for so very long. This is an example we Yanks (or Johnny Reb if your originally southern like myself (Appalachain Americans Rule)) all needed and I hope we can all carry ourselves in this type of demeanor. I think you would have made an excellent President Mr. McCain, unfortunately your biggest hurdle to overcome was the past eight years. I don't think anyone save perhaps Lincoln, Washington, Teddy Roosevelt, or Kennedy could have overcame that.
Congratulations to Mr. Obama. You worked hard, ran a clean campaign, and it has paid off. You are our first African-American president. Make the nation proud sir. Set a great example and lead with the ability your capable of.
Now...for the bad part of all of this. Someone narrowly-minded mentioned that maybe someone can arrange a meeting between Obama and MLKing Jr,. This comment has merit, it's awfully worded and needlessly cruel, but merit is there. Some rascist ass in the US will not be able to accept a black man as president (trust a former southerner on this one) This isn't to say that the entire south is beer-swilling, NASCAR-watching, poor dental hygene rubbish, but there are a few that give the whole a bad name. Some J/O will take a shot at Obama. For his sake and the nation I do hope they fail, miserably. But it will happen.
I hope the Secret Service ate their wheaties that day and are extra sharp, but I'd rather hope it does not happen. Obama does have the ability to lead us. Give him the chance, otherwise we are all playing into the description of southeners I left above.
Sidenote: If I offended anyone by saying, "Black man," please forgive me. I gave up on trying to be PC a few years ago when names for everything changed on a daily basis.
Second Sidenote: Out of curiosity, doesn't Canada still have to have all their government elected approved by the Crown? I still believe that is in the Canadian Constitution. If I am wrong, please inform me. Kindly. If that is true...WEAK DUDES!

In actuality you can trace the current housing crisis back to the 'reforms' made during the Clinton years, and likely all the way back to the Carter years. As far as spending goes, that's been CONGRESS (last I checked NO President has been an active member of Congress in their term). Believe me, I don't blame any President, Carter through Bush, and Obama when his term is up, for any of the idiocy that's been going on in our country. It's these long term Senators and Representatives that use our hard earned money as a 'endless' supply of votes. We should be uniting, I agree. But it's should be to get these idiots out of our wallets, and out of Washington. I would love to see term limits on members of Congress, and have them stay on an actual budget.

Wrong. It is a general rule of thumb that the President during his first term inherits the mess of the former (In this case Clinton). Here is a good article for you to read about Bush more or less predicting the future with Sallie Mae and Freddie Mac from 2003.

Also Clinton had the chance to get Bin Laden twice, SAS had him once and rumor has it we did after the first Trade Center bombing. Iraq, okay no weapons found. CIA reports that the house and the senate saw confirmed it,(The majority of them voted for it too) he just hid them well. Syria, who knows? End of story the Hitler, genocide committing maniac of the middle east was taken down. How is that bad?

Don't you mean 201 years? Finally our country's moving forward. It's only taken 200 years for true equality. And well that's not counting the gays or other minorities. It'll probably be another 700 years before we have real equality. But it's a good start.

So the fact that Bush entered office with an Economic surplus, and is leaving with a massive amount of debt, that means nothing, right?
Clinton did some bad things, but none of that was what I was referring to, getting a BJ on government time, for example; the Economic crisis didn't start with Clinton, it began with Bush.
As for being able to capture bin Laden, didn't Reagan supply him with weapons and money?

You are right Bush did enter the office with a surplus but did you read the article I linked to my message? He did try to stop this crisis in 2003, he was shot down by several ranking democrats in congress. They claimed that the banking system, Freddie Mac & Fannie Mae were not in economic trouble. This is not true, it has been proven that ranking Freddie Mac brass cooked the books and if I'm not mistaken one of them is expected to serve on one of Obama's cabinets.
As for the Reagan comment, I don't know did he? I've heard he did but has it been proven, I'm not getting smart I really don't know. At the same time we helped put Castro in power don't forget, people have a habit of using us and then changing their tune.

Re: President Barack Obama

Edited for grammar and one missing point on Iraq (the last).
Given that arrests already haven taken place for assination plots against then Senator now President Obama the possibility on his life is high. The fact is our Secret Service has a taller order than than usual. I will weep and mourn if an attempt is successful on our President in any context - I cannot predict how our nation will hurt if its because of race.
In the interest of sharing additional points -
-- The last 8 years would not be lambasted by the Left if we hadn't screwed up Iraq, correct?
-- The last 8 years would not be lambasted by the Right if our majority Republican House and Senate 4 years ago had done anything; they didn't, so we criticize, correct?
-- I support our President fully now and hope his promises for moderate policy (which, in his authority, rejecting any extreme bills and submitting non-partisan laws) will come to fruition.
-- If he's going to fix Iraq, I hope he does so with the opinion of the Iraqi Government and doesn't just withdraw; the influx of terrorism would reduce the state to the complications of Israel.
-- Lastly on the past, I just wish we hadn't gone in for nukes or weapons or any other reason than the innocents that were being killed; the debate of WMDs and "blood for oil" reduces the joint military sacrifice that has stopped the slaughter of Iraqi civilians.
Lastly, the most important things I would like to contribute -
-- We have elected a non-white president and I can say honestly I feel no great surprise. I suppose my communities (church, home, work) are already removed from bigotry. However, I share greatly in the joys you others expressed where you clearly still experience that evil. One step forward at a time we make.
-- I do not like that so many voters came out to vote merely because of Obama's race; to choose a candidate because of gender or race or any feature other than policy is a different form of bigotry - I think the word could be nepotism.
That all being said, America has chosen, and to those who have pointed out the influece of Congress it is indeed true that 2 more years will show the quality of today's choices.

Yes. We have moved on as a country and as a people. I'm with all you supporters and optimists of how this country can be better, and why not with an inspiring, wonderful man like Barack Obama. And for anyone who doesn't agree, I know he will work his hardest for you, and listen to your problems. I can't wait to see what this guy can do.

Republican leanings aside, I think he has good intentions. And also I hope you're right, we are in bad shape right now. I've defended Bush in this thread on some things but for the record there are several things I wish he would have done differently.

I've always held a fair amount of respect for McCain, at least as regards his ability to remain largely dignified and respectful. I'm ignoring, for the moment, the low blows made by both sides during their campaigns, as neither side stumbled into the depths of juvenile behavior that have characterized other elections. That said, John McCain's concession speech was, as CP said, one of the most gracious and well-delivered ever. It was truly a credit to John McCain's character. Obama's speech was also very gracious and carried an inspiring tone throughout. It is that message of hope and inspiration that America needs to lead her forward into a new day.
