Do you guys ever feel wasted in terms of collecting transformers Toys?

Feel free to discuss anything about any of the thousands of Transformer toys here. Anything from Generation 1 all the way to the soon to be released, the never to be released or the hope to be released is fair game! Want to show off your stuff? Please post your's and see others in the Transformers Collections Forum.

Funny how I didn't start "collecting" Transformers until the movie series. I still don't understand what makes them "**** on a stick" or "mutated protoforms" or "protoforms that came out of a junk yard with car parts stuck to them" or "the worst Transformers continuity ever" or "not actually Transformers at all".

Can someone actually give me a good reason as to why the movieverse is so horrible, besides saying "it just is"? I just don't see it. Am I just weird because I watch the movies and want a bunch of ROTFs for Christmas? What the eff people?

Yeah this is my new approach to my hobby. I was formerly more "self consious" of my collecting, but now I view Transformers as the best toys I own, and I don't really care what people think about me. I do care that people think they're better than me just because I have a freaking hobby, though.

You should hear the arguments I have at work. I live in good ol' Missippi (or however they say it), and I work with guys who's hobby's are fishing and hunting. Don't get me wrong, I've done both and have had a good time doing both, but I don't seeing it as a hobby. They guys at work just don't like it because "they won't save me if the world ends". News flash, guys, if the world ends, niether will a 10 point buck or a crappie. I like talking about it with them just because it pisses their asses off sometimes (sorry about the language)

The bad thing about me is I'm obsessive compulsive. When I see one I want, I gotta have it. If I could discipline myself better, I would have no antis whatsoever about my hobby. I love collecting Transformers. I remember seeing the first episode for the first time on an awesome Sunday morning on channel "U" ( we had one of those old school t.v.'s that used the turn dials) which was channel 40 back in the beginning days of WDBD. And I loved the toys. They were a robot and a truck. My first one was Optimus Prime. And these toys kept me calm when things were upside down with my family. So no, I don't wasted in collecting Transformers- I just wish I would pace myself better.

You know what, I don't like the movies or the toys, but i'll bet I'll go see the third movie, and try out a couple of the toys. And WHY?- because I'm a Transformer fan. I don't think it should matter which story line or category or even which generation of Transformers you are into should matter. Like what you wanna like. Collect what you wanna collect.

No, they are people who's opinion differs from yours.

I will conceed that as Sid pointed out, there are people out there who are constantly negative in life, but you'll find those people just aren't negative towards TF's, they'll be negative towards everything, plus it gives them attention. They simply refuse to allow themselves to show happiness. That's why they do pay "$20 for a deluxe they just crapped on". They do like it, they just like the attention they receive by being negative.

Because let's face it, if you're positive, do you really stand out in the crowd? No, you don't. Being negative however will get you the attention.

The downside though is that there are some people who's negative opinion is genuine but by nature are NOT negative people and they unfortunately get lumped in with the rest and judged accordingly.

Do I feel like i've wasted time and money on my collection? There are times I think that, generally when I get a really bad figure or have a bad e-bay transaction, essentially it's something that's out of my control that ruins it for me. But then i'll just remember how I snagged a original MIB G1 Optimus Prime for $20 off e-bay and it's all good. :P

very true, its a sad existence to be sure, these people exist in all walks, but with transformers, it seems particularly lame to me.

Probably because collecting bots as an adult is completely for fun and nothing else. I dont need bots, nothing will happen if I dont purchase them, but I love to and that is what counts. That is actually what binds all of us on this board and at the conventions.

That being said, it is sad to see someone use their childhood favourite as a mudhole to stomp. I am happy that these brutally negative people are the minority at the cons though, I only hear from them every 20 customers or so.

I lump it in with the very small amount of people who steal at conventions, it really isnt what the collector's community is supposed to be about, but at every major show, it usually happens once or twice.

no worries, all toy collectors have that in them to some degree. All collectors of any kind actually.

When I first got back into collecting it was when I was dealing with depression, probably was a bit of a "comfort blanket" thing as TF's were what made me happy as a kid.

But I got over that, and like headsortails I think I became a bit of a obsessive compulsive, at one point I was collecting EVERYTHING including repaints, no matter how disappointed I was in them.

Now days I just go for "first release of the mold", so even though I HATE the Animated aesthetic (that's genuine dislike, not attention seeking) I still bought them anyway.

Bloody obsessive compulsiveness. :P

Not collecting per say, though bouts of depression would care to disagree with me(like right now...), but perhaps more wasted in the community. I've watched and observed TF fans and collectors all across the internet for a few years now, seeing everything from mindless drooling over the hottest new and upcoming releases from whatever line, to outcries of seething hatred for one given element of the franchise or another. The fandom is made up of a great deal of different views and beliefs and no one person has the same views or interests as another. To this end I find myself wasting time more often than not as I try to contribute my views and opinions to an openly opinionated community that, ultimately, will not just agree to disagree.

Even now I just feel like I'm talking into the wind.

this is a reoccurring question on TF collector's boards, some people just need something to **** on apparently.

I have talked to collector's online that you would swear hate transformers, but they still buy them all. These are the guys at the cons with a sarcastic comment about all figures, something is always wrong, something is always lame, and then they hand me their last $20 for a deluxe they just crapped on.

these people love the misery, not worth the effort to turn them around.

I think you guys are being a little too hard on Tytus. If you read the post after that, he explains what he meant by what he said. Sure, Tytus was very harsh with his wording but I don't think he meant to insult the fandom and our love for toys.

That aside, some of you have brought up some very interesting points about being an impulsive buyer when it comes to certain molds. I'm the same at times. With the new Generations and Reveal the Shield, I can't help but get excited. I'll definitely be picking these up. The joy of holding the package in hand after seeing it online for too long, well, it's just satisfying ;)

I agree with this. It's part of the reason why I was a member here for many months before posting for the first time, and even now I don't post very often - only when I feel that I truly have something to contribute, no matter how small. But I get turned off by threads that are derailed by page two about how this sucks and that sucks vs. this is awesome and that is awesome and all the bickering. We all have different tastes. Trying to convince someone that they're wrong...it's not worth it. It's not worth the arguing or the time or the effort. What I like makes me happy, and that's why I do it. I really don't care what anyone else thinks about it.

Not to say that you're all bad people; I just tire of the arguments over and over.

You made some great points here. I do think negativity can be formed from trying to get attention, but sometimes it can be the environment in which the individual is exposed.
And I envy you for getting that Prime so cheap. I hunt for him and Ultra Magnus like a Decepticon bounty hunter.

I like you openness on the movie toys. Some fans don't see it this way. Some see the movie, then they don't like it and they make a conclusion that: Bad movie=even worse toys. This how I felt about Animated, because I didn't like the show. Then I got Ultra Mangus and voyager Optimus Prime and I was hooked on the toyline.
And, no, I do not think the whole movie line is perfect. Their were some epic failures in there.

I have definitely wasted too much time and money on Transformers over the last few years.

BUT I'm going to get it back by selling off 50% of what I've bought, my entire original G1 collection to be exact, next year.
(I only bought TFs that I knew wouldn't depreciate in value in case I decided to sell them one day).

I'm also selling off some of my Classics figures that I don't really like (the rare ones from Japan) and aren't real G1 characters to balance up the cash thing.

As for time. I lose, can't get it back.

But I've thoroughly enjoyed getting back into collecting, just wish I had gone about it more slowly and patiently. #-o

Argumentive fan: Well...well...um...G1 is the only good part of Transformers, so 'cause the movies are different from G1 means they ruin Transformers forever, so they suck, so you do too. So it is my responsibilty to rid the fan base of the abominations of Transformers, the worst being the movies. You know G1 is the best but you can't except it.
Other person: So basically you refuse to accept change?
Argumentive person: Nuh uh! It's just that G1 is the only thing there is that's good, and the movies are awful along with Animated, so go run along and be an idiot and let me diss your movie post for you.
Listen to SlyTF1 everyone, and don't let this argument happen to you. I have essentially had this argument before.

Hmm...very true. I unfortunately did fall for that with a new member...who will go anonymous...in a thread I posted and when I decided to present my point to him he put a bunch of words in my mouth and proceeded to tell me to "run along and be a douche somewhere else".

Motto: "Freedom is the right of all sentient beings to randomly click things in the Admin Panel to see what it breaks."
I saw that, and I think someone else dealt with it.

But that being said, there are times when some people are just far too sensitive and take offense to something someone says too easily, or simply don't make the effort to understand what the other person is saying, which will 9 times out of 10 result in disagreements and name calling.

And definitely not saying that happened in that case either.

That's why I said before that not all people are truly negative, they just have a different opinion, but are generally positive in nature. They just simply don't like something.

Yeah I definitely can't disagree with that.

Yes, true, but I already agreed with your statements, therefore I had no reason to argue. If I did agree and still argued, then I'd just be a weird individual.

No, I wasn't being serious either. This is why tone of voice doesn't go over well on the Internet.

Smilies. They're not just cute, or annoying, they help convey emotion too! Image
