Pokemon D&P: Am I now forced to buy a next-gen hand-held?
The original came out when I was in 4th grade. Since the family would be driving down to Florida (to go to Disney World, aka "Most Awesome Place in the Universe!!!"), and I have a very short attention span, my parents decided to get me Pokemon Red, a version of the game that my friends had been talking about for several months. I had mostly played fighting games or Zelda on my Gameboy Pocket, and had never really been too into video games. Little did they know what the ramifications would be. I played for 10 hours straight both days down, never putting it down, played it every second I was away from the park, and bought Blue and played it at home, along with Yellow after I had put in about 140 hours in Red.
In other words, I've got a case of massive nastalgia, but the last system I've bought has been a PS2, and don't seem to have much time at the moment, with exams and all. So, help me bid my time-- is it worth it? Where can I get a DS for cheap? Favorite Pokemon (might as well expand to one fore each generation)? Etc...
My favorite over all is Magikarp/Gyrados (Blastois after)-- I bought that first one for the $500, trained it hoping it would actually learn some moves, and was awed when it became a huge 21' beast. The "great triumph though great striving" is what attracts me the most to it.

firt off: magikarp sucks, but youre right on the gyrados thing. you can get a ds for $130($20 cheaper when it first came out). if you get the ds and pokemon, you can get LOZ: phantom hourglass whenever it comes out.

My wife has been plotting with me to get a DS and a copy of Diamond and then myself one with a copy of Pearl.
One of my friends who's never played a Pokemon game in his life loves it.
I personally don't care either way, but my wife loves it and we play alot together, so it's worth it to me that way. Although I do find it hilarious that I have both my copy of Saphire and Fire Red beat and she doesn't have Ruby finished yet so she can't trade with her copy of Emerald. *snickers*
I think the bonus for me with the new games is that it'll read the Advance cartridges and pull the Pokemon from them into Diamond or Pearl and you can catch them in a park in the new DS games and they'll be the Pokemon from your old games with the levels and attacks you gave them.

Just realize that the DS doesn't play GB and GBC games.
Anyway, get the DS Lite. I love mine, and there's a great game library for it.

the funny thing about gamers is, is no matter if they make a new system thats backwords compat. most ppl will still have the older systems anyways so it doesnt matter to them. i still have all my old systems...only prob is my lil bros have most of them back at my parents house.

Backward compatibility is still pretty important to me. Although I still have all my videogame systems (except Turbo Grafx-16), they might breakdown. My Gameboy (bought in 1992) and Playstation both died on me. But since my Gameboy Advance and PS2 can play those games, it's okay.

Backward compadability is a near nonissue for me, since I have near every generation of Gameboy (except my GB Color doesn't have sound from me smashing it on the ground and leaving it out in the frost... still playing days after), but I've heard some mixed feelings about the game and the new pokemon. Best starter, team, etc? I'd have to go with the turtle, since I had one for 10 years, but, for wild pokemon, I heard there's no fire to be found.

You could always mod your DS. This is probably looked down upon, but I'm going to do it anyways. ALL my friends who have a DS either have an r4 or m3. Trust me, it's worth it. I'll probably get an r4 with a DS Lite in the summer.
