Scorponok
A friend of mine is really puzzled about the purpose of Scorponok. He asked me how does a Transformer become a robotic scorpion and how would that be a robot in disguise?
I couldnt really give him a good answer except that he attaches to Blackout. Can anyone give me a good origin of movie Scorponok? Maybe give me a good explanation to his alternate mode?

Blackout and Frenzy. They apparently both originated as early designs for Soundwave. Blackout's head still bears some similarity to Soundwave's head and the toy is cast in a light blue with yellow linings around the windows.
The toys incorporated Frenzy into Barricade as a bumper but AFAIK it has nothing to do with anything in the film.

No, one of the lithographs of Barricade showed frenzy turning into some guns when Barricade was in vehicle mode. We also see Barricade in the game firing them

Wow... there must be a Targetmaster Barricade figure.
It seems like Frenzy has a little bit more flexibility in terms of what he can become. I'll be interested to see how he uses that in the movie.

As for Scorponok's assumed form, it's very likely that he simply scans a scorpion for lack of other, suitably-sized vehicles.

Based on what I read in Ghosts of Yesterday, I think scorponok already had a tail and pincers in his protoform.
I think he probably still scans a scorpion but only to help him make minor adjustments to his existing robot mode, something more built for the desert.[/quote]

spoilers
the decepticons only have alt forms because they were in hiding waiting for barricade to find the allspark...if they didnt have to wait, they wouldnt have ever scanned earth modes. Scorponok doesnt have his own seperate earth disguise because his earth disguise was combined with black out...
also scorponok does have a human mode, we just dont see it in the movie, i forget who confirmed that, but someone from the movie did

I think it was Orci or Kurtzman, but they only said one was designed, and probably wouldn't make it into the film. It may have just been the toy design he was referring to, since most of the preview material seems to ignore its existence. It could be like Frenzy transforming into a bumper; something that may have been considered once, incorporated into the toys, but written out of the film canon.

hmmmm good point...but the robot mode of scorponok (the toy) really really looks like an after thought
