This morning at 9 O'Clock one of the kids in my school was brought into me by the care staff. AS he is sitting down he says,

"I hurt me hand, I'm not doing any BLEEPING work"

I just smiled and said,

"Really? Well we'll find something u can do. I've heard ur ambidextrous, is that true?"

"Yeah" he says "I can write "BLEEP off" with both hands."

At this point i was sensing a downward turn. Time elapsed so far, about 30 seconds. So being a normal teacher i reply,

"Ok you gotta watch your language"

To which he replies,

"Go BLEEP yourself"

So we are at maybe 40-45 seconds so far, and i have to bring out the threat.

"If u dont change ur attitude ill have to send u to the quite room*"

Of course tough guy says,

"Like i give a BLEEP" and the care staff escort him out of the room.

Total time in class, 1 min to 1 min 30.

What a way to start the day!

I agree, if they will not follow then punish them. However if it continues I would start to wonder about their personal life.

One time a student decided to use my first block class to get suspended (or expelled, I don't rightly remember.) I guess he realized that writing swastikas instead of multiple choice answers for my test on the book Hiroshima wasn't enough to get him kicked out. So, a week before, another student had gotten herself booted out of social studies class, and my genius decided to copy the trick.

He lit up a cigarette in the middle of block one 10th grade English and ash on the floor.

What was I to do? (It was my first year, too.) I tried to tell him to put it out and go to the office, but he silently refused. The assistant principal came up, and he still refused to move. I escorted the rest of the class to the cafeteria, and eventually the student was escorted out in handcuffs.

I've had my share of surly students and such, but that was the most extreme.

I got thrown out of classes quicker than that, then 22 years later I went back to that school as a teacher myself.

College kids are the worst. Some openly made fun of my music teacher, a meek, elderly woman. Just sitting there in class, as she spoke, the kids (no, ADULTS) would mimic her. In German class an idiot yelled out Nazi slogans to the teacher (from Berlin). I knew there was a reason I don't miss college in the slightest (except for some of the teachers).

Speaking of bastard pupils, in my village's school a very strict teacher was once hung out of the window by the feet, by his pupils because of something, I don't know what happened. H survived but was a different person from then on, he was just a shadow of his former self, he got scared if he even just saw a 4th grader, but he keept on teaching, but still he was like the most shiest and scardest man I have ever seen.
He got kickt out of school last year cos he wasn't a good teacher, the parents said "What good is a teacher who is bossed about by 11 year olds?!"

Yea my village is a peace of ****, and everybody is related to everybody in that **** village.
Damn why did my parents choose to live there?

He spent an hour in the quiet room, and i had to talk to him about why he was wrong and what other ways he might have approached the situation -sigh-

After that he went back to class, its a children's prison so its not like i could send him home or call his parents

I am too a teacher but more as a student teacher. Luckily, I have yet to see my students pull that kind of stuff on me. But they have tested me with some things but they are learning that I can be fun or by the book depending on the situation.

Childrens' prison?

I used to work in a secure unit for mentally ill teenagers, not fun.
It was very poorly managed too, big split between the teaching staff and the care staff. Kids used to exploit that no end. Different approaches to discipline + the voices in their heads = carnage, and alot of bruised staff. Not helped any when HMG sent us kids on remand playing the mental health card.

Not fun.

When students get to high school, schools appear to be prisons to them. Many of them do not want to be there, which is unfortunate. They feel that they know everything there is in this world but they really don't.

What age group do you teach, Grim?

They are between 14 and 16t years old. Most have very low to low average IQ and some can not read and write. The kids are generally from dreadful backgrounds and have normally been expleded from school for sometime before we see them.

Their crimes range from theft and drugs offenses, to arson, violent assault. And (although i havent met any yet) the school has housed murderers and prostitutes.

I do have a kid who took hostages though, he is actually one of my best students.

The other teachers might be interested to hear that i have between 1 and 3 students per class. Although 3 is rare, they are just to hard to control in those numbers.

wow!!! If you are curious, I am currently doing my student teaching at the high school level. I have about 60 students and about 2/3 of them are ESL/ESOL students. My students can be nutty but nothing like your situation. I applaud you for working with those students and hopefully turning their lives around.

I must say that I praise you Grim. I could never stand having to teach kids like that, let alone hang out with them. You say murder and prostitution?
I can beleive it, but being the same age as these people it's kinda scary to tink that it could happen....
Anyhoo, hopefully you'll actually be able to help find the good in these people, even though ignorant people like me shun them.

TI dont know if i can turn anyones life around. Sadly the statistics for my kids arent great, we have a 20% success rate (ie. no further serious offenses) and most of the kids have a life expectancy of 30 years old or less.

I have one kid who i think will make a go of it when he gets oout latter on in the year, he wants to get all honors in his Junior cert and eventually join the army. I think he'll make it.

Having said that it is still kinda tough to go in some days, but it is a really amazing experience particularly as this is my first real teaching post-i figure if i can survive this i can survive prety much anything in my career.

Think of it like this:
20 is better than 10. 10 is better than 5. 5 is better than 1. 1 is better than 0. 0 is the only real failure.

I'll give you alot of respect GrimSqueaker. It's amazing to see teens in situations like that, especially being exactly in my age group. How you are able to manage your own life, plus the lives of troubled teens is something I can't even comprehend.

It's true, Grim. My ambition career wise is to just make a sh*tload of money. I won't lie either. I'm gonna do it honestly, but that's the goal. Working with kids like this is one of the last things I'd ever want to do, but someone has to. So off goes my hat as well.
