whew
You saved me a post! I was wondering about the odd spelling, but I just figured the traditional spelling couldn't be used for copyright reasons. Getting permission from a company to use their property can take forever, and who wants to wait?! But alas, I was wrong. Interesting origin though. I'm so out of the loop!

I always thought it was to avoid copyright issues. I never thought about it like that.
I spell it Seibertron, but still pronounce it Cybertron.

I had no idea how it was pronounced or the meaning.
Even though I do I'll still pronounce it the way I always have. Cybertron. Don't think it is that big of a deal. I also think that emailer is an a$$.

Yeah, imo, it is ok that there are those of you here who didn't know why it is Seibertron. It is just that the fact that someone is that big of a douchy a$$-face to the owner of one of the most famous TF sites is ridiculous.

Well, now we all know what was the most pressing matter our "fan" had that day when he fired off that letter to you.
Whoever he is, I want to be living his life, 'cause it's more fulfilling than mine is. /sarcasm
Anyways, re: site name. I'd figured it was the Japanese name for the planet [if not the series], because it seems to be something that happens a fair bit [in anime, or so I heard].
So, since Transformers are Japanese in origin "Seibertron" is the original name for it. "Cybertron" is the English-ised word for it.
Gotta love translation. ^^

English version came first that I remember. HASBRO started the story Transformers, using designs from toys of japanese origin, but giving them a story because they were not selling without it.

Actually no. That's not how Japanese pronunciation works. It reads "Say-bertron" (See-bertron for German) for the planet. The Autobots are "Cybertrons", read as "Sai-bertron". The word is of English origin.

since seibertron is the japanese translation of the english word, i feel cool with pronouncing it the english way. however i am cool with it either way and like the "say-bertron" way for a change.
similarly i often call the RiD guys by their Car Robots names, as that was how i thought of them for ages, until Hasbro UK finally released them over here. and because god magnus sounds cooler than ultra magnus. only really mentioning that as Car Robots was what got me to find this site, way back in the day.

I didn't know why it was Seibertron until I purchased the Headmasters Boxed set,(at which point I had an 'Oh!' moment) but I always assumed there was some reason for it. Anyway, I pitty the sender, as they probably thought they were being really clever by pointing out the 'mistake'.

Yeah, it's pitiful how people who think they know more than you try to talk down to you, but wind up making total dicks of themselves by revealing their ignorance in the process.

Who cares how you spell it. Personally, I always thought it was from the Japanese spelling.
Then he calls you a dumb ass. That's classic.

Why do people like that exist? Even if he was confused and believed it to be wrong there was no need for the name calling... That's what children do. It's so ironic he handled the situation the way he did, because not only was he wrong, but the attitude he used in approaching the problem has caused him negative publicity from the SEIBERTRON, hehe, public. I hope he enjoys his ignorance... I know I do.

I'm ashamed to admit that at first I didn't. Though I knew a some stuff about the Japanese TF, I wasn't aware of the actual phonetics. I always pronounced it "Cybertron.com". It wasn't until you had the little banners under the "Seibertron.com" banner announcing that it's pronounced "Say-ber-tron" that I discovered my error. Much to my regret, I still pronounce it "Cybertron" out of habit.
Heh heh. So do I usually. Had the domain "Cybertron.com" been available back in 2000, we would all be posting under that name instead. It wasn't, so I went with the name of a Transformers Graphic Novel I had worked on back in 1998 which I thought would be a good choice anyways because of copyright issues.
That's what I toght, why it's coled like that, copyright.
But I pronounce it still Cybertron, cos that's how you pronounce seibertron in German.

Actually, no. "Seibertron" read by a German without knowledge of other pronunciation rules reads like the English read "Cybertron". "セイバートロン" on the other hand reads like the Englisch read "Saybertron".
(I hate giving the pronuciations in this pseudo-Englisch reading way, it makes no sense to me, we should use IPA.)
