Tape application of figures

Postby Cyberjet #7 » Fri Oct 26, 2007 9:52 am

I have a couple questions about the tape on the Transformer packaging. I've noticed on recent figures (voygaer figs in particular) that some of the tape isn't applied well or is not sticking well to the whole surface. Previuosly I've seen this with my Star Wars ROTS and Saga figures - over time the tape kinda wears. I've since removed the old tape on two voyager figures and reapplied packaging tape more accurately and securely. My questions are:

1. Has anyone else tried this? Or had this problem with Transformer or Star Wars figs?

2. Does it really reduce the value of the figure if it doesn't have it's original tape, but has better and nicer looking tape? My wife thinks I've ruined them, but I think they look much better.

3. I also tape the "Try Me" holes on the Leader class figures - mustly to prevent things form getting in, like bugs or stuff. A dead spider stuck on Optimus' head would suck. Anyone tape those?

1. No I can't says I've had problems with the tape on the boxes lasting.

2. No, it does not ruin the re-sell. Mind you it will most likely last a little longer down the road.

3. No, I put all my packaging in the boxes Hasbro ships them in. They are a perfect fit for both size and space requirements. If you tape over the Try Me windows then X amount of years down the road, the tape goo will leave marks on the windows.

True about the tape goo. I guess it doesn't matter too much since I'll never sell these.

For some reason my Star Wars figures and deluxe Transformers have some tape wear, because I think the plastic tabs around the back almost pull the tape off. Moreso with Transformers, because they're heavier.

Tape application isnt an artform by any means, I am sure factory workers are just slapping it on as fast as they can.

They only thing the tape represents is MISB. The promise of an untouched bot.

Exactly. Look on ebay for something MISB from the 80s or even early 90s. You can bet our mighty Canadian dollor that it's been re-taped.

But if it's retaped, will someone think it's been opened, played with, and then resealed?

Which, as I think of it, would be pretty tough with all the twist ties and plastic panels holding the figs in place...

I guess I want to retape and still retain the MISB quality. Any thoughts?

I would think that's acceptable for resale or even for personal value.
