Flame on, atheists.
Now Pat Robertson, he is a nutcase.
And using the word atheist with a pejorative denotation isn't the same type of irony?![]()
Hate to break it to you, but preaching the Bible does not absolve him of the damage that he has done to our culture. I know alot of good Christians, and I know alot of bad ones. Not only was he one of the bad ones, but one of the worst. I'm willing to concede certain things, if there were ever any evidence of him actually acting like a Christian, rather than exploiting the ignorance of those who took him seriously.
Preaching against homosexuality is not only an opinion, which is not backed up by any scientifc or empirical evidence, but it is a waste of time. The world has more important problems than a couple of guys going to bed together.
These things tend to happen when you spend your life pointing the finger at others, claiming that you have a direct correspondence with God itself, and kicking people when they are down just so you can raise your ratings. So, you'll have to excuse my lack of sympathy.
I hate to break it to you, even looking at it from an athiestic perspective, homosexuality is an evolutionary DEAD-END.
Falwell was not perfect, but b/c his opinions on why terrorists conducted 9/11 do not jive with yours, does not grant you all-knowing insight into his soul.
Oh yeah, and b/c he has an opinion, he is a terrorist. PLEASE! Don't see to many people fleeing in terror from a freaking televangelist. The Pope, on the other hand...
Eh. I agree to disagree.
With all of you.

Yep, he totally taught that God loves everyone. I remember when 9/11 happened, he went on to talk about God's love for everyone by saying.
Fallwell wrote:And, I know that I'll hear from them for this. But, throwing God out successfully with the help of the federal court system, throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools. The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad. I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way -- all of them who have tried to secularize America -- I point the finger in their face and say, "You helped this happen."
Can't you just feel the love?
Now, I'm a pagan. I have no problems with God/Jesus, it's his fan-club, douche bags like Fallwell, who give Christianity a bad name.
He may have preached that God loves everyone, and by everyone he means anyone who is Christian.
Now, I feel bad for his family, but his death is a good thing. Thats one less person holding us as a people from moving forward.

How is it exactly an evolutionary dead-end? Because it doesn't result in childbirth? Neither do masturbation or oral sex. I'm sure he was against those, too. Besides, childbirth also contributes plenty to evolutionary blockage.
In fact, I'd go so far to say that we'll only begin to evolve further when people get over this impetus to rut endlessly and have children that they have no intention of raising properly. There's no need for it anymore. If you are going to have kids, do it right or spare the rest of us dealing with your little Frankenstein.
And I'm sure that Mr. Falwell felt that he had an insight into my soul, merely due to the fact that I don't espouse his personal opinions. So call us even.
I never personally said that I hated the guy, just what he stands for. You're entitled to your opinion, but I did feel the need to point out that it wasn't just nonbelievers who were happy to see him go. At best I'm apathetic. Sure, I can give condolences to his family and such, but honestly I just don't care either way.
Even in my first post I said that I had always felt bad for the actual Christians in this world, because he does indeed make them look bad.
I told the fire to go **** itself, and it did.

I don't know much about Falwell, just of him. Don't have cable, though, or live in the States, if that has anything to do with it. I'm guessing he's a very opinionated televangelist? But if we were to order the deaths of every strongly opinionated person, we'd be left with Snoopy and Winnie the Pooh. I don't think we can point a finger at any particular person and say "Away with him" no matter what his opinion or broomstick-up-the-rear is. This guy just got in front of a television to express himself. If fans were to hear my opinions on Lord of the Rings, they'd string me up.
Should this be moved to the philosophy forum? I know it doesn't really butt heads about anything abstract or philosophical, but I can see it tending toward that.

I don't know much about Falwell either. All that I can really remember is I think he said something like "If you are Christian you'll vote for Bush," or something like that.
Well I didn't vote for Bush.
So to him I must not be a Christian.
I wouldn't applaud his dying or anything, but I would say to him "Booo! Mr. Falwell, please don't give Christians a bad name by saying some things no Christian would say!"

I started and stopped caring about the dumbass when he said a teletubby was transexual. I then realized he did not have nearly enough important things going on in his life.

Except Fallwell didn't love thy neighbor. He only loved thy neighbor if thy neighbor was a white Christian.
He. Was. A. Bigot. If you can't accept that, you have problems. Although he said God loves everyone, he didn't include certain people, including, but not limited to:
Muslims
Gays and Lesbians
Pagans (Note that "Pagan" does NOT mean devil worshipper. Nor has it ever.)
Jews
And many more.
Don't defend him, espiecially with biblical text. I have enough problems with Christianity as it is.

Thanks Shadowman.. Your post sums it up nicely.
Not a sheeple.
Think for yourself, don't let the magic TV box and social media do the thinking for you.
Question EVERYTHING!!
Just because you have a youtube review channel doesn't make you special.
I look forward to attending a Botcon soon only to settle matters with several idiots in person (yes this is a threat).

Well said, Shadow. Frankly, I can't see how anyone could support a wealthy, influential american preacher who actually spoke out IN FAVOUR of Apartheid. Who fought tirelessly AGAINST civil rights.
I don't have a huge problem with the generally practiced version of Christianity. I don't have a problem with most Christians. But, frankly, I know evil when I see it. This man was petty, cruel, and above all WRONG. His views were inexcusable, and his stance indefensible.
And now he is dead. Diablo's minions weaken.

for the individual yes, but then evolution is not about the individual, it is about the species,if it was life wouldn't be multicellulsr. many succesful species today have members of their "society" that don't have, and are incapable of producing offspring.
likewise with the menopause, it stops a potentially lethal situation(old women+labour=much Death) which increases the ratio of carers to offspring, which is a a good thing from an evolutionary point of view.

Nice angle, and very well-put.
But my statement stands: Evolution+homosexuality=extinction.

To be perfectly fair, I don't know who Tim LeHaye is. And Wikipedia doesn't want to say, so I may never know.
But the thing I said goes to anyone who wants to try to defend guys like Fallwell. The thing is, it was said during a bout of misunderstanding.
EDIT: OH! Tim LaHaye is the guy who did Left Behind, right? Where everyone LaHaye didn't like had to stay on Earth for the Rapture?
Yeah, kinda dumb.

I just don't think it makes him bigoted or a horrible person. He's going on a literal interpretation of the Bible. As far as I know, he's never slammed any group, or anything like Falwell did. If everyone wants to preach tolerance, it has to include his beliefs as well. Don't most religions preach that theirs is the way to enlightenment/heaven/nirvana/whatever? Nobody bashes them, as long as they're not advocating harm to others. What he believes is his business.
