The UM Question

Postby AceBaur Prime » Fri Apr 20, 2007 7:08 am

After seeing yet another repaint of Optimus into Magnus (titanium this time) I started thinking abot UM and his "armor". If Magnus is a "white prime" essentially underneath his armor, how come his helmet has a mouth and his prime form has face plate? And how does his mouth work since his face plate just moves up and down?

Since my knowledge of is primarily centered around the toon, I want to hear some peoples opinions about it since this is mostly a comic invention.

I'd wondered the same thing myself on occasion, but only now have I bothered with an actual answer.

I'd say the armour head is a smidge more than 'just' a helmet. Although the G1 toy version simply slotted over the head, at full size it'd have a lot more gubbinry involved, and once it's connected up to the rest of the armour, it'd have full functionality, just like, say, a Headmaster.

My alternative answer is clever animatronics. Henson's team can do wonders nowadays.

Well the facecious answer would be that the designers wanted the helmet to lok sufficianetly different than Prime's and Magnus' normal head, so they made it an actual face with a mouth.

However, I doubt that is the answer you're looking for. :P

From a mechanical point of view though, I would be more apt to agree with Ramrider's "alternativve" answer because, when Magnus' armor gets busted up and starts falling apart in TF: War and Peace, we see his face plate under the broken helmet face.

Interesting.... I think I would probably agree with Ramrider as well.

Tramp you wouldn't happen to have that issue of the comic would you? I'd like to see how they depicted that

maybe it is motion activated. As the mouthplate moves his outer helmet moves, just an opinion...

I have the trade paperback collected editon that combines all six issues. I would have to scan the image.
