Toys R Us raised the prices of TFs?
Has this happend by you? Deluxes are now $11.29 and Leader calss was over $45! Is this going to be the new pricing?

My local Target (Alhambra, CA.) raised their prices:
Deluxe: $10.99 (from $9.99)
Real Gear: $7.44 (from $6.99)
Other Targets still at old retail prices, but I see the trend now. *grumble*
As of this Wednesday my local TRU still has same old retail pricing, but I won't be surprised if they raise the TF prices.

They have seperate prices for Classic deluxes here. At one TRU, they are $11.99 and the movie ones are still $9.99.
I have the check the closer TRU still.

That makes sense considering that rumour going around that the cost of many toys would go up 10% in the next year after the lead-scare from China... I read about that somewhere...

This is due mainly to the falling $US on world markets. It is hitting record lows against all major world currencies. As a result, your dollar does not go as far as it once does. This is due to a government that is spending $2B a day in Iraq (Vietnam all over again and the last time the $US was this weak), who is constantly running deficit after deficit and has an overall debt that exceeds $8 trillion under Bush when it was only $2 trillion pre-Bush. Other countries like Canada in the mean time have got their debts under control (only $472 B), are having budget surpluses of $14B each quarter and are enjoying the benefits of high resource prices for oil for which we are the US's main source for oil exports (not Saudi Arabia).
The $Canadian dollar in now stronger than the $US for the first time in 36 years! See the graph below and the link provided as proof.
http://ca.finance.yahoo.com/q?s=CADUSD=X
US companies are simply not able to keep up with the fact that your dollar simply does not go as far on the world market when they go out to buy the goods to put on your store shelves. Expect increasing prices across other sectors in due course as the US greenback simply keeps faltering on world markets. Your weak dollar and your weak economy will make things worse as will the next turn-around of $1 Trillion in sub-prime mortgages that come due in April 2008. If you do not do something with how your federal government spends its money and how people with $20K incomes are allowed to own $750K homes then this will only get worse, the $US will fall further and yes the TFs in stores will get more expensive.

What are you talking about? This has nothing to do with why the figures are going up. The cost of materials to produce the figure is probably no more than 50%. What has gone up is legal nd insurance costs because of China messing around with Toy Quality. Toys are also greatly underpriced and a correction of pricing was needed regadless.
And keep your political nonsense out of the toy forum, especially when you make no sense. For example, you make like a weak US dollar is bad...except for any US company that EXPORTS goods. And while Canadian debt is very low, it's not that hard to manage when your GDP is less than the the state of NY. And please don't bring up anything about oil when said country is sitting on top of the world's largest supply of oil and can't do anything about it.
Cliffnotes...No political non-sense in this forum because it usually leads to responses like ine.

Did not mean it to get political. If it did and it probably did it is my bad. The $US weakness is a key reason why your prices are going up though. If it was strong you would be able to buy more product on the world market that you IMPORT like TFs for cheaper. As it weakens due to socio-economic-political reasons your purchasing strength suffers. It is a no-brainer really. Prices for TFs and other items in Canada are slowly falling in the mean time as our $ is stronger so there is a link. If there wasn't then under your arguement our prices should also be rising. Apologies if anything noted above sounded anti-US as it was not intended. It was more intended to be of an outsider looking in and trying to enlighten a good friend who has just lost his way.

There's no need for that in this forum. Especially when it has nothing to do with the pricing issues.

Well the economic situation in the US does impact the pricing issue but if you do not wish to acknowledge it that if of course your opinion and I respect it of course. I would though start watching prices in other sectors to see what is happening there in the near future if there is a spill-over affect with my argument.
Also to your point as to CANADA ($1.172 trillion) having the same GDP strength as NY State. From this graph it appears you were wrong. It is actually Texas

http://bigpicture.typepad.com/comments/ ... gdp_a.html
To your other point regarding quality issues in China you are correct that the lead paint issue is a problem that would impact prices as well (the main one still IMHO being the weak $US), but so was Mattel's design flaws with the little magnets on most of the recalls that the Mattel CEO publicly acknowledged.
To your argument regarding the US Export sector you are correct. It is flourishing under the weaker $US just like our Export sector is dying under the stronger $CDN. However, your Import sector is suffering as your Export sector flourishes and that includes all your imported goods including TF toys.

Yup us too. Our Leaders have always been around $60-70 CAD. UK prices though are simply way out of whack.

There's no denying that this has to do with the weakening US dollar. I expected the Canadian prices to fall, not US ones to rise. I guess you guys have just been enjoying a nice benefit of living in the US, and unfortunately it's becoming less. Too bad it's going this way instead of our prices getting a cut to be on par.

Agreed. I would have preferred our prices going down as well. The Leader price difference with the US is simply beyond stupid. $70 CAD @ TRU Canada vs $45 US now at TRU US. No justification for it in any stretch of the imagination. The Bay, Zellers and Walmart though have dropped the Leader price to $60 CAD so TRU Canada is a bit behind the crowd on some repricing. Hope for more repricing to our benefit (lower) in due course. The $CAD is up again today!
