Well if you get an Alternator, I'd recommend Jazz. He just looks cool and he isn't very difficult to transform. He goes for about $20-25 on ebay. He'd be a great introductory Alternator.
As for reissues, they can be pricey depending on the figure. My favorites as a kid was Optimus Prime, Megatron, and Soundwave. They are being re-released under the Encore line, so you can preorder them.

It depends on you really. The Alternators are fantastic and realistic, but the G1 (vintage or re-issue) is where so many of our hearts lie...
A healthy bit of both is what I recommend.

Personally I prefer the reissues, but as said it dpeends on you... Also, once you get started in this type of hobby, you'll have everything (money permitting) eventually anyway.
I remember when I used to just pick up the "cool ones"... After a while everything apparently became cool enough to pick up...

If it has to be one, go for an Alternator. Jazz/Zoom Zoom are great molds, but so too is the Hound/Swindle mold.
Re-issues can be harder to find, and a tad more expensive for some of them, but most of them were re-issued for a reason, they are great figures. Prowl, Red Alert, Inferno..
Dont worry too much though, once you start collecting one or the other, it'll quickly get to the point where you'll be trying to get your mits on everything you can.

I collect everything TF realated. And as others have said, it's up to you. It can be an expensive hobby when you go after some of the harder to find TF's, and the re-issues are up there. Though you can pick up re-issue Soundwave at TRU for about 30 bucks. Can't really find any of the alternators at the stores anymore. And they're not going to be making anymore alts. in the furture.
Long live the Decepticons!! I love G1 Starscream!!
Don't tell Starscream, but I'm in love with movieverse Ironhide!
Current TF count: 255 (and growing)

Try for Generation 1 first, since they are the nostalgic building blocks to the TF collector. Then look for Alternators.
If you are gonna go for G1, you will most likely gonna be buying the Japanese rereleases. Nothing different, but the language and the box it comes in.
You can find some at:
Hobby Link Japan
Bigbadtoystore
TFsource
Just to name a few.

The TRU near me had like 6 soundwave's. And I can't find any alts here in my city. Just a bunch of the movie toys.
