Okay, G1 started EVERYTHING I don’t have to know rocket science to know that, but I think you guys have missed my point, what makes G1 any better than something new? I’m not asking why G1 is the first, I’m not asking why every thing is inspired by G1, I’m asking why do you people never accept anything new? Yeah the alt modes were detailed, etc ect, but don’t modern toys have detail? What was MP Prime? Was he not as good as the original? I like G1, I like the toys but you guys never accept anything new for what it is, and to those who mentioned it, this discussion has nothing to do with the show and/or stories or I would have posted it somewhere else if it did.

I’ll say it one more time, what makes G1 always better than anything new?

zemper wrote:as the others have said it, there are alot of great things about G1. i could sum it up in 3 phrases:

1.) car/vehicle detailing
2.) nostalgia factor
3.) PRICE VALUE! :P

but really, greatness depends on one's point of view. i grew up in G1 also but i find the later toylines as "great" as G1 was. i'm not one of those guys who would say that nothing beats the original. though we could argue that G1 started everything.

:MAX:

I caught the "Shockwave" :P (Oh, come on the door was wide open on that one.) of G1. My fandom started with the G1 re-runs and the G2 toys. I agree whole heartedly with Zemper. I love the G1 toys, but I find G1 Wheeljack just as great as Energon Downshift.

I never stated that I don't accept anything els but G1!
MOP Prime is a MP, you can't compare him to a deluxe or something!

And if you have a look at the new toys they have superior articulation and botmode details, but the G1 toys had better playvalue, more weapons, more to choose from and better missile launchers.
Plus they looked more valuable, look at them, with chrome paint and stuff.
G1 isn't the best ever in everything, they are in many things but not all!

I never directed my comment toward you, and yes comparing MP prime to G1 Prime may have been a little one sided, but what makes G1 Astrotrain better than classics Astrotrain?

Once again, I will plainly state that G1 is "better" because it is the original. But who says we never accept anything new? Yes there are some fans who only collect G1 toys, but that is because that is what they grew up on, and that is the original and the start of the craze. If you were given a choice between a Babe Ruth signed baseball, or a baseball with a signature that looked like Babe Ruth's, what would you chose? For some people, collecting G1 toys is that cut and dry, anything other than the original is a replica/uninspired.

You also keep bringing up points that directly relate to our statements. MP Prime, that is nothing more than a more articulated (and larger) G1 Prime, they didn't drastically change anything their. In fact, that just proves how popular G1 was, if it wasn't why make toys that are throwbacks?

And yes, modern toys have detail, but a lot of them in the newer lines have "unrealistic" details. I love my Cybertron Prime, but how in the hall can you claim he's a fire truck? On what planet would that fight fires? Also Megatron from any line after G1/Beast Wars, he's some sort of futuristic space thing ... yeah he's detailed, but how do we know it's right? G1 was detailed by realism standards. The cars and trucks were modeled after real things you'd see everyday on the road. As a kid, you knew knew if the car driving next you you was really a robot in disguise. (Yes I know their were some exceptions, but more often than not they were based on realistic alt. modes). Today, I would notice if one of the Transformers was driving down my street because a lot of the toys look out of place, kind of throws away the "in disguise" part.

now don't get me wrong, I am not a G1 purist, in fact, other than the DVDs I hardly own any of my originals, but I also (for the most part) only collect modern 'bots that are representations of G1 characters. (Again, I'm also a sucker for something cool looking.) I love the classics line, I loved Cyebrtron, I loved Armada, and I loved Energon, and I recently got into the Beast Wars toys. I love them because they remind me of G1 ... but given a choice and money wasn't an option, I'd have a full G1 collection, because the toys wouldn't have to remind me of something else, they would BE the originals,

I don't have classics Astotrain jet, still have to wait for him to be realesed over here.
But the G1 one, had all these awesome weapons to him, that interesting transformation and that awesome and strange look in both altmodes, and he looks real good.
But I can't compare those two just jet.

Your topic is, "What makes G1 Great?" I think people are attempting to answer that and I agree with a lot of the good points people have made.

Your question as to why people never accept anything new is false. If people never accept anything new then the new lines would not be selling, and they obviously are selling.

And your "What makes G1 always better than anything new?" is a different and new question. And I don't think that G1 is always better than anything new so I can't answer that.

My post had nothing about nostalgia, just what I thought made it unique.

I’m getting lost in my own thread, I honestly didn’t mean to offend anybody, next time I start a thread I’ll make what I’m getting at a little clearer, and phrase it in a way that may not cause such a tizzy.

To everyone who (somehow) was offended by my convoluted thread I am sorry. Can we all be happy now?

I have to agree with pretty much everything that has been said already.

I also wanted to add that when I pick up a G1 figure, there just seems to be a soul to it. I can't really explain it. It seems to be a combination of the weight and the engineering and the character that speaks to me like nothing else.

And I also collect more than G1, and love a lot of the newer stuff. I adore the Classics line, and have found quite a few figures in other lines that I really like, even though I haven't seen some of the shows.

1-G1 Astrotrain had 2 convincing alternate modes (Classics none).
2-G1 Astrotrain made a good use of die-cast (Classics is all plastic and feels cheap).
3-G1 Astrotrain had 2 differently deco-ed alternate modes : one black, one white (Classics' are too alike).

Now guys don’t take my thread too seriously, I didn’t think I would be messing with such sentimental subject and if I had, I would have never even thought of bringing it up. It just urks me when I hear someone say something like “Pass, because that looks nothing like the G1 character” I never said that just because you collect G1 figures or that if you like G1 you’re stuck in the past, I love G1, I have G1 figures and I’m a G1 fan.

I’m dumb and there’s nothing else to it :? .

G1 will always have a warm place in most collector's hearts.

The show was much better than the train wrecks we get these days and the voice actors gave those characters life. Too bad so many of them have been lost. RIP

The figures articulation was not there in most cases but the figures were build better with actual die-cast and with a MADE IN JAPAN quality that you simply do not have from CHINA (no matter what you say).

The box art was wonderful and you must remember that they came with missles on tree, label sheets that required application, a red decoder to see the tech specs and in the very first run fully coloured instruction booklets. This is unlike what we get these days. I loved those label sheets and red decoders.

Look how well they display as part of my collection below.

G1 will always rule IMHO! It has no comparison. As OP said in BW: "Die-cast Construction. It's a Lost Art!"

I don’t care if its die-cast or plastic but I will second you, there is a much needed return for the made in Japan sticker.

Unfortunately won't happen due to the high costs. Would be great though. Most collectors would approve if it ever happened.

I guess some of the short-sighted collectors would. For the first run, after which the TF line would sink as it became far too expensive to compete in the children's toy market.

For me there are some things in G1 that are better then anything else. For me I think that the G1 Combiner teams are the best that have ever been mead with the RiD combiner teams being in second. Thus I like to collect G1 combiners over any other line, but there is also the nostalgia of it all. Obviously, like most collectors I would think, I like to collect the toys of my favorite characters and some of those characters do not exist out side of G1, Bumblebee and Blitzwing are two examples, although they both are getting new toys now, before the movie and animate they didn't have any new versions of themselves since G1.

The way I feel about my collecting I can sum up with a line I heard a Star Wars collectors say. I like the old toys because they have the nostalgic appeal. I like the new toys because I think they have better qualities such as articulation, so I will collect what I like.
