they do look rather odd don't they? Maybe something to do with them being Diaclones?

Because they were piloted mecha, then teh Transformers cartoon was made around the figures, so take at easy on these 25+ year old classics.

Really, I want to know why they do have heads? A prime opportunity for some TF continuity to make it more clear that these are alien robots, not beholden to human proportions or anatomy. Of course, that doesn't always work out for the best, but still it'd be interesting to see a G1 cartoon styled version of the characters which adhered a little closer to the toy designs.
assembling a Neo-G1/TF:TM cast. Please PM if you have (or know of) the following at a reasonable price: Classics or Henkei Astrotrain, Sunstreaker, Sideswipe, or 3rd Party iGear Ratchet and Ironhide.
Also looking for Universe Repugnus and Overbite, Frostbite and Longhorn and any Webdiver toys.

Motto: "If you feel my lightning, you will never hear the thunder."
Before Hasbro and Takara developed Transformers, the figures were from the Diaclone line. The majority of the characters of G1 were Diaclone. The G1 molds are exactly like the Diaclone line. So, in terms of Ratchet and Ironhide, they were figures with no heads in both Diaclone and G1. In the Diaclone line, both Ratchet and Ironhide were not designed to be a sentient robot in the Diaclone line (they were piloted by a tiny driver figure who sat in the driver's seat), the toy of Ironhide & Ratchet did not have a proper head, instead having a pilot's seat behind their windshields.

I'm hoping for a Classics remake of both Ratchet and Ironhide as well.

While it's not the quite the same thing, I did start a thread in the Transformers General Discussion forum about G1 accurate Ratchet and Ironhide models that you can make out of cardstock. There is a link to a site that has a PDF file that you can print out on cardstock.

See, this is what I cannot for the life of me understand, why didnt takara do this?

The lack of heads keeps me from buying the encore 'hide and ratchet.

Their first comic appearance (Marvel US and UK #1 - after the ark crash and the bots wake up, during the roll call) had them looking exactly like the toy...

True but when you think of Ironhide or Ratchet, I doubt you picture them with chairs where their faces should be.
