20th Anniversary Prime

Postby blueprimal » Mon May 14, 2007 1:03 pm

Hi guys I have the 20th anniversary movie Prime figure and I saw some online that has the longer exhaust pipes on the shoulders and also chrome grill. Mine doesn't have this, the exhausts is shorter and the truck grill is just a drab gray.
Is there a different version?

Lets see, there is:

Takara Master Piece Convoy MP01:
Chromed, long smokestacks.

Takara Master Piece Convoy with Trailer, MP04:
Same as MP01, only with trailer.

Hasbro 20th Anniversary Prime:
Short Smokestacks, and no chrome. also slightly orange paint scheme, instead of deeper red. Might be wrong but ithink this is the plastic only version

And last but not least:
Hasbro 20th Anniversary Chromed but short smokestacks. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this one does have some diecast parts.

Hmm...now it got more confusing...
Theres so many versions. Mine has short smokestacks, Red(not orangy), no chrome(dull gray plastic) and its body is diecast. I have another same one but this one is still boxed and was given out at the Transformers Movie booth at ShoWest convention and its also identical to the one I have.

I only have MP 01 and 04. I thought the 20th Primes were Diecast as well. I wasn't aware there were all plastic 20th's.

As far as Im aware, they ALL have the same amount of diecast.

Basically, in 2004, both Hasbro and Takara did a version of the toy, Hasbro called it 20th Aniversery Optimus Prime, Takara called it MP-01 Masterpeice Convoy.

The differences were:
Takara's had longer smoke stacks.
Hasbro's innitally had a grey gun (like Takara's) but then went to a more accuratly coloured Black one.
Hasbro's had 'battle damage' paint on it (the jury is still out on how good an idea this was).

Other than that (and the packaging) they were identical.

Fast foward a couple of years.

2006.
Takara release MP-04 Perfect edition Convoy. Exactly the same as MP-01, only including a (Roller-less) trailer.
Hasbro FINALLY release 20th Anniversery Prime in the UK (huzzah).

Either 2007 or late 2006 (I cant remember).
Hasbro release the 20th Movie edition Prime.
He has the same accesories, but the paint job is conciderably worse. The red is too orangy, there is no chrome, the gun is blue, there are yellow highlights (a litle like cybertron prime) either side of his faceplate, and it comes with a stand that has some of the poorest impressions of Optimus Prime's voice heard to date.
Even more impresive is the fact that (in the UK) they are selling this new (not as good) version in the same ailes as the origanal 20th Prime (which is still full price) for TWENTY POUNDS more.

Edit:
From your discription I can only asume you have the most recent version.
Is the box similer in style to the classic's packaging design, or more G1-esque? The Classics style one is the newer version.

I did say i might be wrong.

I can't be entirely positive, but i recall there was one that was only plastic. But i can't be sure. so take it with a grain of slat. In any case, sounds like the one blueprimal has is the "orangy" Hasbro 20th one with better paint.

I beleive the 'all plastic' thing was nothing more than people expecting the worst of Hasbro.

Yeah I think you guys are right, I think mine's the final hasbro version cause my gun is blue color. Also I noticed I liked the MP-01 more because its got translucent eyes and mine is just sky blue paint.

To make matters even more confusing, you can get the long stacks to put on your Hasbro figure so there is the other possibility that any Prime you see could be a custom of the Hasbro Version.

Yes, but you can still tell those because they still have the 'battle damage'. Also, I never noticed 20th dvd prime didnt have chrome smokestacks. The grill I noticed, but not the smokestacks. Also, 20th Prime has the proper shiney eyes. Yey!

I like the DVD Prime. MP-01 and the 2004 version were too chromed out for me.

Someone produces the longer smoke stacks that you can swap out for the short ones that come on the Hasbro version. I'm not sure why Hasbro went short stack, but I think the long stacks look better. If I can find a link to someone who sells them I'll post it.

Just do a google search for Transformer Repro parts. I forget where I got mine but they do look better.

Oh and the Battle damage paint comes off very easily just a bit of rubbing. So for a little extra effort and $8 for reproed stacks you can make the 20th anniversary version look like MP-01 at half the cost. I bet no one could tell which mine is without close inspection or me telling them.

As for the eyes they aren't translucent but rather a high gloss blue metal.

I also notice some other changes in the 20th movie edition. The taillights on the toes are different. The gas tanks aren't chromed either. The silver on the shins is missing. And there seems to be a slight mold change in the chest compartment. If it wasn't for the awful orange hue and the lack of chrome it might have been an interesting variant.

Isn't there a different picture on Prime's communicator as well?

I have both Hasbro versions, and 20th is better than 20thDVD, but clearance price of 24.99 compelled me to pick up 20thDVD. 20thDVD has Megatron and Grimlock on the communicators, vs Bumblebee and Starscream on 20th.

And the both Hasbros have the short stacks so little kids that shouldn't have this kind of toy don't poke out an eye.

That's why I keep mine well away from my little ones.

20thDVD is a great toy, don't get me wrong, it's just the paint job that sucks, otherwise they are pretty much identical, and heavy!! That diecast weights it down.

Yeah I think the short stacks is so kids won't poke their eyes out or break it and swallow them. My son loves playing with it...and he's gotten pretty good at transforming it too.
I am trying to find a trailer for it as my son is obsessed with the original G-1 Prime we saw at an antique store that was selling for $75. From then on he kept wanting a trailer for it.

Nope, another rumor.

The different pictures on the comms were on Ultra Magnus (MP-02, not released stateside)

Not much. I used an old t-shirt and a bit of elbow grease. I actually took it off because i found my figer nail could scratch it really easily. Just be careful on the left shoulder. The white paint on the insignia comes off pretty easy too.

Oh sweet. So there's no need to use alcohol paint remover? Just a t shirt or my fingernails? And the red paint underneath remains underneath? Hmm, I'll give it a try.
