Check out The Walking Dead, and I'm not just saying that because of the TV show. I've been reading it for about 3 years, and (give or take the occasional issue) it's always gotten better.
Check out The New Warriors vol. 1. Definite must read. The series is making a spotty comeback in TPB form. Definitely a lighthearted read with a few serious issues (rape, white-black-and-gray situations, racism, etc.) thrown in it and the related titles. I wouldn't blame you for not giving the later volumes much thought (though I'll always see them through rose-coloured glasses) but the first volume is definitely worth at least a very close read. The art only gets better as it goes on, and it's where Mark Bagley first cut his teeth. Marvel Comics at its most underrated.

Atomic Robo. It's the various exploits of a robot built by Nikola Tesla, including fighting Nazi combat mechs and super soldiers in WW2, teaming up with himself to fight a time-defying Lovecraftian horror, and fighting Dr. Dinosaur, a super intelligent Dinosaur who may have traveled through time (But probably didn't). It's written by Brian Clevinger, the guy who made 8-Bit Theater.

I second New Warriors, in any incarnation its a pretty good read.
I'd also recommend Thunderbolts, again while any run is pretty good the first run is really good.

Re: Comics Worth Reading?
Check out the last couple years of Captain America.
Best title out with the main character killed off.(for awhile at least)
Try the Realm of Kings and War of Kings books. Marvel and relevant space stories done right is always a good read.
Secret Warriors is actually pretty good read so far.
Not the latest X-Force arc, or Sex and Violence, the one before that was cool as hell.
My completely blow your mind, but weird you out at the same time pick is the new SHIELD series, just weird and bizarre might love it might hate it.
Preacher is an oldie but a goodie as well.

Recent suggestions...
I really love Secret Warriors, my favorite ongoing superhero. It's headed towards its series finale but it's a brilliant comic.
GI Joe: Cobra is a great licensed comic that almost transcends its cartoon/toys counterparts.
Hack/Slash by Tim Seeley is one of my favorite indie books right now.
The recent Action Comics run by Paul Cornell is great. Instead of Superman it stars Lex Luthor.
All Star Superman by Grant Morrison & Frank Quitely, it's one of the best Superman stories of all time.
If you haven't read these already...
-Runaways
-Y: The Last Man
-The Walking Dead
-Sandman
-Invincible
-We3
-Sleeper
-Ed Brubaker's Captain America run
-The Immortal Iron Fist by Matt Fraction and Ed Brubaker
-100 Bullets
-Preacher
-Sandman
-Blankets
-Box Office Poison

I"m still right into Green Lantern. This comic has been great since "Rage of the Red Lantern" and continues to impress. It's the one comic I can't wait for each month.

Yeah, they're also sneaking the url's into their profiles so you have to look at the little web icon under their names.
Guilty comic pleasures at the moment ...
Justice League - Generation Lost - I think I might be a Booster Gold fan.
IDW's Locke & Key
Green Hornet ... all of them.
All the Top Cow stuff
Enjoyed most of Wildstorm's stuff. Screw you DC.
All the Hulk titles. I've been a fan of Hulk for years.
Marvel's Galaxy stuff (Guardians of the Galaxy, Nova ... bring on the new books!)

I'm reading the following ongoing series:
X-Factor The only ongoing Marvel series, that is worth reading IMHO, it never ceases to amaze me just how great this series.
John Byrne's Next Men It's great to see Byrne back on his greatest work.
Transformers is an absolute blast I love reading this series.
Darkwing Duck The terror that flaps in the night is back and is one of the funnest book out there.
And I'm looking forward to reading The Grim Ghost, Phoenix, and Wulf when they come out in March.
I'm also reading the following mini-series:
Mass Effect: Evolution
Nemesis
Thunderstrike
Captain America: Man Out of Time
TPB/HCs:
Irredeemable
Incorruptible
The Incredible Hulk Visionaries: Peter David vols. 1, 3-7 TPBs (I don't have vol. 2)
The Astonishing X-Men Omnibus by Joss Whedon and John Cassaday
Black Kiss HC
The Rocketeer HC
Shockrockets HC

I started reading 'The Boys' which is pretty much a 'what if superheroes were all selfish, hateful, perverts who don't give a crap about protecting people and the small group who are tasked with keeping them in check'.

Has anybody been reading the Secret Avengers run? It's surprisingly awesome and character driven, which is a complete about turn from the OMGEPICSAGA run Marvel have been recently guilty of.

It's safe to assume that I'm just taking the piss.

As stated before Hack/Slash is awesome.
Also Haunt from Image.
Then there are the DC digital comics, which where originally zuda (owned by DC) webcomics Bayou and Calvin The Hammer, Both are the only Zuda comics I can recommend paying money for, they are awesome especially The Hammer, who is officially my favourite anti-hero/hero-criminal in the comics world.

If you can somehow get your hands on a copy you should try "Batman vs Predator"
Big McIntosh walked away from the shed on the farm where this took place. He cleaned himself up, said yyyyyyyyyyyyyup, and walked off, ready to buck some apples.

Blade of the Immortal and The Darkness are the only two I've been trying to keep up with lately. I haven't really kept up with newer comics for about the last five years so I have a lot of catching up to do. I never could really get into Marvel and DC superhero comics, but I do enjoy titles frome Top Cow and Aspen.
I have scans of The Walking Dead but I just need to find the time to read through all of them.
