How do YOU choose which action figures to buy??
So how do you? Is it by the coolness? Your fav. in the movie? I have Bumblebee 74 and 08, barricade, ironhide, blackout, starscream protoform and optimus prime protoform. Those are the coolest looking ones transformed and in car forms. They must look cool in both forms for me to be into them. Even though it would be fun to have all the characters in the movie. So how do you choose which ones to buy?

I get the ones that appeal to me in both modes. Doesn't have to be from the movie. or be very accurate to it. Just something i like.

I choose based on how much I like the character, how good it looks in both modes, articulation & G1 homage factor.
From the movie line I have Real Gear Spyshot , Speed Dial and Booster (Laserbeak); Wreckage and Proto Prime (Plus all the Robot Heroes if you count them)
I have Revoltech Megatron.
From Titanium I have only Scourge.
From Classics I have all of Wave 1 Deluxe plus Grimlock and all three voyagers.
From Cybertron I have only Soundwave, Sideways and Scrapmetal.
From ALT/BT I have only Tracks and Shockwave.

I only collect characters that are G1 related and even then only the ones that I liked as a kid. For me, Tfs is more about the nostalgia. Occaisionally I'll snag something that just looks too dang cool on its own and regardless of its line, like Primus for instance.

I buy whatever i like the look of, i do not purchase for rarity or association. Its still tricky though as i can sometimes buy a toy and then after a while not like it so much (aside from the novelty thing) happened to me with classics jetfire of all pieces!! then again i can get a toy that I kinda like and then find after a while it grows on me, eg movie barricade.

I am on the same page as most of the posts, whatever grabs me. There are certain things that keep me away from certain figures though, ie; if a prime mold is going to have windows on his chest, then they have to be the same windows from his alt mode. I hate it when they fake that!
Movie V Prime has this crappy feature, just seems lazy to me.

generaly i buy em after seeing their car and robot forms and their weapons, sometimes i prefer to see reviews and then decide which to buy...only thing i cant refuse to buy is an optimus prime (RID, Armada, Energon, Cybertron, Movie...)
ROTF Optimus Prime needs guns...

Most of the time, I'll go with figs that are nice looking in both forms. I'll also go for personal favorites not considering the look all that much. I'll also sometimes just buy a figure because of its rarity but this is not happening all that often. I like to read and look at reviews. Those can sometimes change your mind on a certain figure. And in this case, if I liked the figure in the movie, I might buy the toy, even if its not perfect looking (Blackout).
So yeah there you go. Overall, like everybody, I pretty much have to really like the fig to buy it.

Well, in my case the choice is actually made for me. The Netherlands rarely get a complete toy line, maybe something like 40%. So I buy everything we get at local retail and some exceptionally cool ones online. The sculpt of the robot mode is the most important to me, followed by the paint scheme, the alt mode, the posability/transformation and then the character.

Like everyone else says, aesthetic appeal is a big plus. Secondly, I look at availability and price point. Is this figure gonna stay until I get some money? And if it isn't, can I afford to do it.
And I mostly go with favorites. The occasional deviation is fine. That's how I ended up with Cybertron Armorhide and Classics Mirage, two of my favorite molds. Otherwise, it's Astromechs and Primes, with lesser favorite characters on occasion.

I just buy whatever I like based on bot mode, alt mode and weapons and whats it place will be in my display. Sometimes I will like a figure based on its usefulness in my display. The bad side to that is, its usefullness might dissapear when my display changes.
Ah, the great double edged sword of fig collecting.

Hmm..w ell the movie line, my goal was to get 1 of every character, and to have them be close to their scaled size. Obviously didn't have much of a choice with a few figures.
I'm all about displays, so for my decepticons, obviously not thrilled that bonecrusher is smaller then barricade, but oh well. For frenzy, I'm hoping the robot replica will fit in with my display nicely, to bad they didn't make a scorponok, the deluxe is a bit to big.
As for everything else, I usually try to collect all the cool ones from a certain line, and then reduce that to raelly cool lines.. so for me.. movie line, alternators, and g1 (bought some classics. cool stuff, but, not exactly alot of figs i like from there).

Being a completist it is hard. Once I start a line I must see it to its inevitable end.

Longs for the days of G1 where we only had to worry about Megatron, Soundwave and Laserbeak wanting to be Autobots, Swoop calling himself Tracks and Slingshot calling himself Slingslot!

Re: How do YOU choose which action figures to buy??
I go based on the following criteria
1) Coolness of robot mode. This is by far the most important part for me. If the bot mode is bad I won't buy it.
2) Do I like the character?
3) Do I already have a version of the character?
4) Is the alt mode cool?
5) The least of my concern but I still like to think how does this one fit into my whole collection? Does he make it uneven? i.e. 5 more autobots then decepticons

If it says "Transformers" on the package that usually warrants a look.
If it does not transform then I usually pass, unless it is a character for which no transforming figure will be made.
If the character does not fit into a storyline then I usually pass. (for example, the Target repaints)
If I feel that a better version will eventually come out, I usually pass. (for example, deluxe Bonecrusher).
If it is a transforming figure from a storyline that I know and enjoy and the figure appears to be the definitive version that will be produced, then I usually get it.

Psha, how can you have your evil without any good?
How does your diplay look without any Autobots for the Decepticons to battle?
Or maybe I'm just looking into it too much again.
lol.

It probably looks like the Decepticons are fighting amongst themselves, as they are wont to do...
I definiteyl prefer the cons too. I've got a shelf for cons and a shelf for bots, but the con shelf is a lot more crowded.

well there are 3 things I keep in mind:
1- AVAILABILITY! I can't buy it if I can't find it
2- Cost, if its 50+ bucks it damn well better be cool! (god I want a Unicron!!
)
3- Cool factor. How bad ass is it? I don't tend to buy figs just because I like the character, If the fig is as good as the character I am willing to work for it but thats about it.

yeah i tried being a completeist, i got back into tf's starting with RiD and i bought about 99%(a select few slipped my grasp regrettably) of every new one up to and including energon(plus lots of old g1 stuff off ebay)... thats when i realized i have no place to put anything and half my collection is now in storage. after that i started only really buying g1 homage figures and really awesome ones by the time cyberton started.
