What's the deal with these two? Are they supposed to be best buds or something? I don't remember any such thing in the 'toon, so was something suggested in the Marvel comics? Or in any of the other TF comics?

No I don't think so.I think it has to do with them being
second and third in command. They have a respect for one another,but that's about all.
