Is there any way for the collecting community to determine the production run numbers of a specific transformer model?

For example, how many Wheelies are there out there in the world? How long would fans have to wait until Hasbro and Takara/Tomy could release this information? I imagine due to business competition they wouldn't want to release their current production practices, but how about data from 20 years ago?

Any thoughts? Thank you.
