Robots in Disguise (series)

There is more to Transformers than movies, cartoons, comics and toys. Discuss anything else Transformers here.

Robots in Disguise (series)

Postby Malikon » Wed Oct 01, 2008 7:33 pm

Ok I finally got a copy of the Robots in Disguise series, (slowly working on getting all the shows made since G1.) I know I'm a huge G1 fan, but I'm really trying to expand and watch the other series and give them all a chance to grow on me. So far Beast Wars is very cool, good show but I just can't get into the toys. Same for the Unicron Trilogy, though some of those toys have grown on me.

So now I've got Robots in Disguise and it's,.....really weird? Ok I can accept Prime as a Firetruck and all that, the Autobots aren't really that bad, and the Spychangers are actually pretty cool. Buts what's up with the Decepti- Errr, Predicons?

So the bad guys are a pink/fruity Flying Squirrel who's rather Starscream'ish, a Skunk, and a Toad? WTF? Ok Megatron's kinda cool, at least he's somewhat monster'ish, Dragon/ship/intimidating/etc. A Skybite is sorta interesting, though a flying Shark is really pretty far out there....

But a freaking flying Squirrel and a Skunk? I mean I really watch these shows because I like the 'Cons, the bad guys are always cooler, (like GI Joe) but this? THIS? Really? A Flying Squirrel? UGH. I'm starting to dread everytime the show focus's on the 'Cons. Which is a shame, I'm digging the art style and I like the Autobots, (Prowl as a white Lambo is pretty sweet!) But Jeez,...I never thought I'd watch a TF Cartoon where I started to dread having to watch the 'Cons.

I actually haven't been this annoyed since Galvatrons voice in Season 3. *cough SoundsJustLikeRumbleWTF? cough*

So my question is: Does the show redeem itself later on? The 'Cons get meaner/nastier/more interesting to watch?

Honestly to those who've watched the full series, is it worth forcing myself to watch the rest of the shows just to be able to say, "I've seen them." ?

Is it like Armada which was kinda "eh?", but at the end Starscream is a huge monster/planet and just steals the entire end of the series? (or was that Cybertron?)

So is it worth watching the rest of Robots in Disguise? Are the toys really cool? Does the show pick up?

thoughts? Opinions on the series?

The show does pick up and the Decepticons will come. Just be patient. Underneath all the humour there's a really good storyline. Keep in mind that this series suffered from when the Japanese felt it neccessary to add bizzare humour to stuff. The series was also never meant for American audiences. It ended up being a filler line after Hasbro dropped Transtech while working on Armada and became an overnight success on accident.

I love the toys! I'm only missing about 6 figures from the set and am still on the hunt for a Fortress Maximus.

I actually don't mind the humor, I kinda like the shows ideas so far. It's just the flying squirrel really fills me with "WTF?" everytime I see him. And then yeah the skunk, etc.

To me the bad guys are supposed to be scary intimidating bad guys. I honestly don't know why the Autobots don't just grab their stomachs and fall over laughing everytime they're confronted with an angry Squirrel and his Skunk and Toad buddies.

I'm glad you said Decepticons are coming. I hope you mean actual D'cons and not Predacons.

I mean actual Decepticons. Scourge and Ruination (combiner). For most of the time when the arrive they'll be the guys you just don't want to mess with, but after Galvatron come they'll begin to fill a comic relief role. That happens with every bad guy in a series though. As soon as the next bad guys arrives, the previous one becomes comic relief. BW Inferno for example.

RID is the only thing I've liked outside G1 and TFA. I like that it wasn't trying to shoehorn itself into an existing continuity, or focusing too much on humans. Yeah, I'm looking at YOU, Beast era and Armadaverse. I like that we saw brothers again, and loved the banter between them. There's a bit I really like when they see Rail Racer form for the first time:

Side Burn: Wow, how come we can't do that?
Prowl: I don't know, I think they're double-jointed.
Side Burn: Maybe they can teach us how to do that.
X-Brawn: I was never a good student.
Side Burn: Come to think of it, I wouldn't want to fuse with you guys anyway.

Worked for me, and really made me wish we'd got to see more of Sideswipe and Sunstreaker in G1.

thanks for your reply, I think I remember that conversation if it's in the first 4-5 episodes.

It IS growing on me and I do plan now on finishing watching all of them. No one seemed to say anything bad about the show except me, lol.

It's that danged squirrel man, he bugs me.

I really like Darkscream though. I'm also a fan of Sky byte's theme song.

I've been trying to find good toy pics, but the gallery's down.
Especially want to see some good pics/reviews on the white Lambo Prowl. ...and Prime,..of course.

I have pretty bad luck with this gallery actually. I know it's not Seibs fault it's down, I just have bad luck/timing with his gallery.

I've started watching 3 episodes of RID. (Downloaded till ep 6. The rest are still on the way.)

Malikon is right. This is a really weird TF series.

Aside from the fruity Cons pointed out, the style is very 70s Japanese robot cartoon.

What's with announcing the name and brand of the weapon everytime you fire it? It's so silly. If i were the target, i'd already moved out of the way or bring up a counter-attack weapon before you finish the announcement! It gave me goosebumps hearing them do that.

The Predacons are more comic relief than any serious threat at all.

It's reeking with traditional Japanese style of over-decorated warrior and senseless exaggeration. Totally inappropriate for TF kind of story and action.

I may be wrong, because i've just watched 3 episodes. But it seems the Predacons are more concerned with petty energy robbery and senseless juvenile pranks than any dedicated cause.

The style of this series ranks lower than Voltes V or Daimos.

Sideburn's lust for "female" colored cars?

X-Brawn's Spiderman-swinging rip-off?

Giant flying Shark swinging his tail in a fight?

Megatron transforms into ... uh... i really can't make it out. (???)

The only saving grace is its graphics.

I hope there's more, other than these nonsense, in the succeeding episodes.

Check my sig or my favourite RiD moments!

Auto Bot: weren't you paying attention just now? :D The show improves. My only gripe about the series is that Megatron leaves all the work to the others. I REALLY wish he was in it more - he's mean looking, brutal and his voice is cool. The episode where he has Prime in bonds and is just beating him - that violence in a kid's show shocked me but it's great.

Wait for the episode where Ultra Magnus appears - that's cool. The only episode that beats in IMO is the next one!

I don't like many of the toys, which is a shame. I have OP, UM and Megatron. I'll get Scourge and maybe Railracer soon but I don't want any of the others.

Yeah. I guess i just got impatient when i reach episode 3, and the Predacons are still clowning around. :P

And the weapon announcement gets more and more pronounced and obvious. (I really hate that.)

Well, anyway, i'm planning to finish the whole series. :)

Ep 7 to 15 is halfway downloading. I should have them in 2 to 3 days more. After that, i still have to download Ep 16 to 39. Long way to go. :?

yeah I'm still watching them too. (and some season 3 G1 since I finally got a Galvatron fig.)

Ultra Magnus shows up eh? Yeah, then I really do gotta finish watching them.

I do get tired of them screeching TERRIZE and TRANSFORM all the time. Idk, just do it, I'll watch.

Megatron ties up Prime and whups him? That sounds cool reminds me of the end of The Animated Series when *SPOILER* Megs is holding up Primes knocked out body and using it as a shield to absorb the incoming laser fire. That was seriously a favorite Megs moment!

I'm still up to Ep 6. Ep 7 will be coming tonight.

This could be the first time i see Autobots outnumbered Decepticons, and yet couldn't pull off a convincing win.

Prime telling the brothers to hold back? And let the Spychangers show off? What the hell.

It's like 6 Autobots ganging up on a single Decepticon.

Weird.

lmao.

Didn't you love that? It was the energy module or something they were 'guarding' going down the road right?

The toad freaking hops up to the it and runs off with it while Prowl is standing RIGHT FRIGGING NEXT TO IT!! I was like, "Seriously?"

Then he was all surprised it had been stolen? Dude, you and your bro were standing right next to it when it was stolen, how did you not notice??

The Spychangers were seriously cool though.

The person who wrote that episode has some missing screws in his head.

That's the worst episode i've seen so far. In a couple of hours, i'll be starting with ep 7.

I have a question. Did Megatron seriously transform into a giant flying hand???

Ep 7 gets worse. It's so pathetic.

What's with Sideburn chasing red cars as an "obsession"? What's he gonna do with it? As if the red car can transform. It will be like human guy obsessively lusting for a life-size toy doll. (Sex doll?) It's totally senseless. It's freakish perversion. This is not for kids to watch.

When Megatron finally got Prime in his hands, what did he do? Slap him repeatedly with his plastic sword, that won't do any bit of damage at all. Not even a scratch to the paint job! WTF!!!

Err, rape the tailpipe? I find myself wondering why a machine would be interested in the opposite sex anyway.

It's a funny cartoon, and I rather do like the animation style. It's just there are a lot of groan worthy moments in each episode.

Do you notice that the yellow Spychanger comes out of the billboard all the time? Every single time!

What?! Is that his dormitory? His pad? He does nothing all day just snoozing behind the billboard?
