Scratchbuilding Zarak

Postby Ramrider » Sat Jun 10, 2006 9:20 pm

While I know it's not entirely an original idea, I've been pottering recently with the idea of making my Fusion Scorponok/GF Megazarak into a Headmaster. I looked at potential kitbash material, mostly spare Minicons like Rook and Crosswise, but mostly drew a blank. Then I came up with the idea of scratchbuilding it.
I've drawn up a few sketches of how I intend it to work. The general principle is that of a G1 Headmaster figure, only scaled to fit E-Scorponok, and with better articulation.

One of the sketches:

I've started with the face, which will also form Zarak's back piece.
Here's the piece so far, Blu-Tac'd onto Scorp's head. It's literally just constructed using layered pieces of sheet styrene. The brow piece, which will form the hinge that lets the crest cover the face, is a piece of small styrene tube.

The transformation is basically exactly the same as a G1 Headmaster, essentially bending the body over forwards and flipping the panel up off the face.
The only real exceptions to the rule are that I intend to hinge Zarak's head so it flips over the chest to move the Scorp neck to a more sensible position (if I just use the head as a peg, the neck will be just under Scorp's chin, so by flipping it over the front of the chest, I can create a new neck peg further back). I'm also rigging Zarak's arms to act as Scorp's antennae.
I think the most challenging part is going to be the articulation - I want to incorporate ball joints into the shoulders and hips, and I want to do it from scratch (if I can make it work, then it's something else I can include in later projects). I think I know how to do it, but since I haven't tried before, it'll be a bit trial-and-error.

I'll try and come up with a more detailed sketch to better illustrate where it's going.
