It's a few days old, but there's no thread on CERN reportedly breaking the speed of light. Though not everyone is entirely convinced.

Well, not so much broken as "we think we broke it but we don't believe it either, someone prove us wrong."

Still, the chance to prove relativity is a flawed and outmoded idea. Someone get to the basement and find the plans for the FTL drive.

Next up on Pimp My Jeager.

The idea of subatomic particles being able to move faster than light is not new; finding and recording subatomic particles actually doing that is substantial. Those particles are moving faster than, now it's time to figure out a way for objects much larger to do it as well. Come on, CERN! Hurry it up and take the "fiction" out of "science fiction"!

Here I am, wondering why someone created the thread and no one has responded in quite some time. This is huge news!
Anyway, CERN is very reputable in the science department, so to say they've erred is making a huge deal. But to say someone has broken Einstein's theories is also a huge deal. I don't know where to fall on this, but E=mc2 and mass dilation dictate that something of mass can't reach the speed of light, so I'll be waiting to hear how they managed to accelerate neutrinos past lightspeed.

Yah know... Maybe i'm just being dense here, but what's the big deal about Einstein's THEORY being proven wrong? Everyone always acts like it's proven fact...

Einstein's theory of general relativity has acted as the backbone for every field of astrophysics to date. Should it be proven absolutely wrong on more than one account, that would mean theories derived from it are wrong as well.

A scientific theory isn't the same as a theory. All motion above subatomic motion is dictated by the Theory of Relativity.

Looks like this has been debunked. I guess the scientists forgot to account that the GPS satellites tracking the neutrinos were also in motion...
