I don't think they could in volume #1.
From memory, I think that the combiner process had only recently been developed or implemented in volume #2, and I inferred that only a few (Constructicons, Protectobots) could execute it, and even then there were some hazardous results.
I don't recall seeing Motormaster in volume #2, only in volume #1, so I don't think there's any evidence that the Stunitcons specifically could combine.
I may, however, be wrong. My memory of it is fuzzy.
P.S. I think this should be in the Comics forum.

Wasn't Motormaster there when Grimlock and the LCS hijacked the energon that Starscream and company were stockpiling? Right at the start of the Dark Ages run?

Swindle together with Motormaster?? Am I missing something here? I knew that the toys could swap parts, but I didn't think the comics would let the groups switch members.
Check out my sales thread, plenty of Generations, and Reveal the Shield figures for sale!!

i didnt say they combined in the comics, just saying that it appears that these two could not combine (with their own teams of course) at least in vol #1, we do see other combaticons, but these dont show any kind of inability like swindle and motormaster.
In vol#2 hotspot states the existance of menasor, bruticus, superion, defensor and devastator, we see devs and defensor but no other gestalt members that appear to have combining abilities. motormaster just looks simplified in vol#2 cant see conectors

My take on it is that combiner technology was already developed but that the mental interlinkage was not in its 'perfected'/G1 state. So individuals could combine physically but the mental result was real hit or miss in terms of effectivness. WWI Devastator was more or less at its G1 operating level as was Defensor, but they were more unstable during the WWI period than G1. Essentially gestalt forms were walking wrecking balls and that was good as long as you pointed them in the right direction. The system needed refinement.

Ah, there, you've just answered the question you asked in your initial post.
As for connectors: remember, it's "The War Within". All the characters had redesigns, so maybe they'd have different transformations. I can't imagine that within the realm of the story the connectors would be visible, anyway. I'd imagine they'd retract inside the robot when not in use.

The connectors are not visible in any incarnation of the 'toon or comic G1 gestalts anyway, so lack of evidence is not evidence.
