this is probably a really dumb question but, how do i know if i scored a real prototype other than trusting what i was told?

it depends on where you got it, and also try comparing it to the mass produced toy

I've often seen them printed with "Not For Sale" somewhere on the figure. But yeah, pretty much depends on the figure.

Pics of the item will really help us here. Some prototypes come in a solid color plastic and unpainted, some come painted, some are puposely damaged or marked.
