Questions re Titans Return Brainstorm, Blurr, and Highbrow

Hi, what is the purpose on Brainstorm and Blurr of that piece on the nose of the vehicle modes that pops up? It reminds me of landing gear, but that would be upside down. Also, what is the purpose on Highbrow of the chest piece flipping out? Most of the time it just tilts out, but one time I got it to flip all the way out.

Its a landing skid for the Titan Master gun emplacement mode of the nose.
The nose can be removed and pegged into a larger Base mode of another figure as an emplacement.
